Did you know that one in four animal species known to scientists is a beetle? We find “new to us” beetles all the time in Griffith Park even after 8 years of observations. This crimson beauty is called Neandra marginicollis but we could find almost no information about it besides the fact that it’s a type of long-horned beetle found mostly in the West of North America. For more about beetle diversity check out the episode of the podcast Shortwave on NPR Podcasts from 9/10/2020. And don’t forget to add your beetle observations to the iNaturalist app!

🪁 For May Day, our teachers crafted hand kites for each child, using ribbons tied to wooden rings in the colors the kiddos chose themselves.
🦄 The kites sparked their imagination. Within minutes they had become unicorn tails and hair!

📖 Today we read another beautiful bilingual book by Brendan Kearney called Forest/¡Salvemos los Bosques! This tale follows Finn and Skip as they help animals find new homes after logging destroys their habitats. It's a tender story that includes real tips for how families can help the Earth.
🎨 The kiddos loved the illustrations so much that they studied them intently after the read aloud, and many of them carried that inspiration straight into art time. We also learned how to mix paint to make our own browns and greens.
🌎 This is how learning happens at Aventuras. Literacy, art, language, and care for the Earth woven together in one quiet, ordinary day.

🤩 After more than seven years in the same spot, we still find ourselves saying “what is THAT?”
🪲 This morning we discovered a beetle none of us had ever seen before, striking enough that we initially thought it was a bee or yellowjacket. Turns out it’s a Strophiona tigrina, a type of flower longhorn beetle. We watched it glisten gold in the sunlight and started wondering together:
🐝 Could that resemblance to a stinging insect actually be useful for the beetle? A disguise? A survival strategy?
🤔 That question didn’t come from a textbook. It came from a group of preschoolers crouching in the dirt, paying attention. This is what seven years in one place looks like: The forest keeps teaching us, every single week.
