Southeast Community Foundation hosted summer tutoring programs in Southeast Los Angeles communities from June 29th to July 30th.

We tripled our reach with new sessions in the cities of Vernon and Maywood, in addition to our regular summer session in Huntington Park

With the help of our general donors, all the school learning supplies were provided to our students needed for our summer sessions.

And, because hungry kids are less likely to learn, SCF partnered with the City of Maywood, and local organizations like Hollywood Food Coalition and FoodCycle LA, to provide snack and meals to students.

Most importantly, all three of our summer programs were FREE to local families.

As we get ready to start our Fall 2026 tutoring programs, we want to thank all of you for supporting our Summer 2026 tutoring sessions!

"So how do we fill the gap? If you’re a family with means, you hire a tutor. This raises a fundamental issue of equity. Literacy support cannot remain a luxury for families who can afford private tutors. The system must operationalize high-dosage tutoring for every at-risk child, shifting from reactive remediation after failed third-grade tests to just-in-time intervention in first grade. Tutoring must become permanent Tiers 2 and 3 infrastructure, not a temporary “learning recovery” program."

Here at Southeast Community Foundation, we believe in equity in education. We offer high-dose/high-impact tutoring for all ages, in schools and local communities, free to families.

California has invested heavily in the science of reading, but literacy test scores haven't greatly improved. Studies show that the practice of waiting until third grade to start intensive tutoring for struggling students is too late.
