Richard M. Eaton, a well-known and respected social-cultural historian of Islam and premodern India (1000—1800), has been awarded the 25th Giorgio Levi Della Vida Award in Islamic Studies by the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies.

Eaton has made great contributions to Islamic studies, especially Islam in premodern South and Southeast Asia, where the majority of Muslims in the world live today. His scholarly work focuses on the interactions between the Hindu and Islamic realms of India, as well as the impact of Persian culture.

The Della Vida Award is a tradition established in 1966 by CNES founding director, Gustave E. von Grunebaum, to honor outstanding scholars in Islamic Studies. This year, the award ceremony and accompanying conference, Sufis in Premodern Persianate Societies and Politics, will take place on November 5.

On April 29, 2026, the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies hosted the graduate colloquium “The Visual Culture of Algeria Through Exchange, Circulation, and Global Networks,” the first event at UCLA devoted entirely to the study of Algeria’s art history. Organized by graduate students Ava Hess (Art History), Yubai Shi (Art History), and Sarp Tanrıdağ (Architectural History), the program fostered interdisciplinary dialogue across art history, history, political science, literature, and architecture.

🎥 Join UCLA Library for a screening of “Ojalá Supieras” (I Wish You Knew), a documentary excavating the long-suppressed history of Islam in colonial Mexico. Drawing on unpublished manuscripts and inquisitorial records, director Mariam Saada reconstructs the lives of those persecuted for crypto-Islamic practice and reveals the intertwined presence of Muslim, Jewish, Christian and Indigenous peoples at the heart of colonial society.

📢 The screening will feature a Q&A with Dr. Saada and a curated display of UCLA Library holdings.
