In The Coroner's Silence, I examine how institutional practices shape what we come to accept as truth and what is left unrecorded, misclassified, or ignored.

This line is part of a larger question: what does it mean when the institutions that define truth are incomplete by design?

This Tuesday, I’ll be speaking at Virginia Commonwealth University for the Uncounted Virginia kick-off.

We’ll be talking about what official records reveal, and what they’re designed to obscure, when it comes to police violence.

If you’re in Richmond, I hope you’ll join us.

Grateful for the opportunity to speak at the West Valley Regional Branch Library.

Engaging with readers, listeners, and community members in spaces like this is a powerful reminder that these questions about justice, visibility, and accountability resonate far beyond the page. Thank you to everyone who showed up and contributed to the exchange!

Had a marvelous time talking with Adam Santelli for his upcoming documentary film on how the cash bail system preys on the poor and threatens public safety.

Thank you to everyone who came out on March 14 at the Los Angeles Public Library, Reseda Branch. It meant a great deal to be in conversation with a community willing to sit with difficult questions and think collectively about accountability, care, and justice. I’m grateful to Daryl Maxwell and Malik Books for making the event possible.

One thing we talked about in this interview is how much depends on the official record. If a death is misclassified, minimized, or framed in ways that favor law enforcement, families are left with fewer paths to truth and fewer paths to justice.

I joined the Green and Red Podcast to discuss these patterns, the work behind The Coroner’s Silence, and the broader crisis of deaths in custody in the United States.

I recently joined Margaret Kimberley on Black Agenda Radio to discuss my book The Coroner’s Silence.

In our conversation, we examine how death records are often written in ways that obscure police violence—shifting responsibility onto preexisting conditions or the actions of the person who died.

These are not just technical errors. They shape public understanding and determine whether families can access justice.

When Reverend Quincy Rineheart shared that I had been inducted into the 41st MLK Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College, it brought me back to the beginning of this journey. I wanted to be a scholar because as a student of Xavier University, another venerable HBCU, I admired so many Black thinkers and activists for their ability to change the world by transforming people’s minds — there are too many to name, but Martin Luther King was one of them. I’ve spent my career writing about science, religion, and racism, and working with community to mend the social safety net and protect vulnerable people from state violence. This work has always been an extension of the hope I carry for the type of world that we all deserve — that so many have died for already. It means a great deal to be given this honor by Morehouse College. And I am fortunate to be recognized with other wonderful scholars and activists who stand in the moral and political tradition shared with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Society writes its policies into the body.

When the safety net disappears, police fill the gap — and death records often hide the story.
