In The Coroner's Silence, I examine how institutional practices shape what we come to accept as truth and what is left unrecorded, misclassified, or ignored.
This line is part of a larger question: what does it mean when the institutions that define truth are incomplete by design?

This Tuesday, I’ll be speaking at Virginia Commonwealth University for the Uncounted Virginia kick-off.
We’ll be talking about what official records reveal, and what they’re designed to obscure, when it comes to police violence.
If you’re in Richmond, I hope you’ll join us.

When Reverend Quincy Rineheart shared that I had been inducted into the 41st MLK Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College, it brought me back to the beginning of this journey. I wanted to be a scholar because as a student of Xavier University, another venerable HBCU, I admired so many Black thinkers and activists for their ability to change the world by transforming people’s minds — there are too many to name, but Martin Luther King was one of them. I’ve spent my career writing about science, religion, and racism, and working with community to mend the social safety net and protect vulnerable people from state violence. This work has always been an extension of the hope I carry for the type of world that we all deserve — that so many have died for already. It means a great deal to be given this honor by Morehouse College. And I am fortunate to be recognized with other wonderful scholars and activists who stand in the moral and political tradition shared with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
