Best vs Worst: Airline Water Quality in the U.S.
A new 2026 Airline Water Study reveals major differences in onboard drinking water quality across U.S. airlines.
Delta Air Lines ranks highest with a perfect 5.00 (Grade A), followed by Frontier Airlines, with Alaska Airlines in third place.
At the bottom, American Airlines ranks last among major carriers with a 1.75 (Grade D), just behind JetBlue.
Here's how the regional airlines came out in the study:
GoJet Airlines leads regional carriers with 3.85 (Grade B)
Piedmont Airlines: 3.05 (Grade C)
Sun Country Airlines: 3.00 (Grade C)
Endeavor Air: 2.95 (Grade C)
SkyWest Airlines: 2.40 (Grade D)
Envoy Air: 2.30 (Grade D)
PSA Airlines: 2.25 (Grade D)
Air Wisconsin Airlines: 2.15 (Grade D)
Republic Airways: 2.05 (Grade D)
CommuteAir: 1.60 (Grade D)
Mesa Airlines ranks worst overall at 1.35 (Grade F)
While bottled water is primarily used for drinking, airlines rely on their onboard potable water systems to make coffee and tea, making water quality an important passenger safety issue beyond just tap water.
The three-year study analyzed 35,674 water samples and found E. coli violations were the strongest factor driving poor scores. Researchers also flagged weak enforcement of federal aircraft drinking water rules.
Bottom line for passengers:
Skip coffee and tea onboard and stick to sealed bottled water.
