STEM Prep is hosting a vaccination clinic on August 11 at MSCP from 9:00 to 12:00 for STEM Prep students ages 12 and up and families! No appointments are required, and health insurance is not required. Plan to bring a photo ID showing your date of birth. For more info, please check your email or contact the school.

This week we spotlight Math and Science College Preparatory, a South Los Angeles STEM Prep High School that was featured in La Opinión. Reporter Garcia describes how Math and Science College Preparatory took initiative in joining forces with various organizations to assist its students in achieving higher education. With the help of mentors, workshops, and communication with parents, ninety-one percent of their students were accepted into a four-year university. This is fantastic! Read below to find out more.

Estimadas familias de MSCP, CPA y SPES:

En los últimos días, hemos visto la tristeza, la preocupación y la ira de las personas demostrada a través de protestas en todo el país y aquí en Los Ángeles.

Nuestras escuelas condenan inequívocamente las políticas racistas dentro de nuestros sistemas que devalúan las vidas de los afro-americanos y conducen a la pérdida de vidas. Todos nosotros en la comunidad de STEM Prep estamos procesando con dolor y enojo. Sin embargo, es importante para nosotros como comunidad nombrar que estos eventos pueden estar acumulando más trauma y angustia además del estrés, la ansiedad y el miedo relacionados con COVID-19 para nuestras familias, estudiantes y personal afroamericanos.

Estamos junto a las personas usando su voz, exigiendo equidad y justicia. Apoyamos a nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal que se ven personalmente afectados por las amenazas diarias contra su bienestar y existencia. Como STEM Prep Schools, nuestro poder está en la construcción conjunta de un futuro con ustedes, un futuro que aún no se refleja en las realidades de todos en nuestra comunidad. Esta organización fue iniciada por líderes de color para estudiantes de color. Nuestro compromiso de mejorar los resultados educativos para nuestros estudiantes no renunciará. Continuaremos siendo agentes de cambio para nuestra comunidad educando a nuestros estudiantes para que sean pensadores críticos de STEM, defensores de sus comunidades e interruptores del statu quo. Cambiarán el mundo a un lugar mejor para todos.

Dear MSCP, CPA, and SPES families,

In recent days, we have seen people’s sadness, worry, and anger demonstrated through protests across the country and here in Los Angeles.

Our schools unequivocally condemns the racist policies within our systems that devalue Black lives and lead to the loss of life. All of us in the STEM Prep community are processing with pain and anger. However, it is important for us as a community to name that these events may be layering further trauma and heartache on top of the COVID-19 related stress, anxiety, and fear for our Black families, students, and staff.

We stand alongside the individuals using their voice, demanding equity and justice. We stand with our students, families, and staff who are personally impacted by the daily threats against their well-being and existence. As STEM Prep Schools, our power is in co-constructing a future with you, a future that is not yet reflected in the realities of all in our community. My hope is that our students live in a safer and more just world than the one we exist in now. I wish for more than just our kids’ survival-I want them to thrive.

This organization was started by leaders of color for students of color. Our commitment to improve the educational outcomes for our students will not waiver. We will continue to be agents of change for our community by educating our students to be critical STEM thinkers, advocates for their communities, and disruptors of the status quo. They will change the world into a better place for all.
