Never in my wildest dreams did high schooler me believe I would be living in a huge city, far from home, earning a competitive salary, and being called Doctor. I believed in myself, even when teachers, counselors, and others did not. My friends and family uplifted me during the times that I lost my optimism and self-worth. I’m still me, but it’s different now. Be grateful for the journey, even the wrong turns might be the right ones in the end.

I spoke about what ethnic racial socialization is, why it’s important to investigate as a parenting practice in later generation Latine families, what messages some parents perceive as more or less important to transmit to their young children, Q-methodology as an excellent mixed methods approach to this work, as well as future directions for research💡

📖 Peer Mentorship Matters: Surviving as BIPOC Students in School Psychology 📖 As an underrepresented scholar in the field, I have been dependent on mentors, confidants, and cheerleaders who have supported me throughout my studies and now into my early career. This week, my mentee and I had the privilege to share with other BIPOC scholars about how we have engaged in a long-standing, peer mentorship over the last 4 years. We reflected on our personal journey, key ingredients to a successful peer mentorship, the ways in which peer mentorship differs from a traditional hierarchical mentorship model, and how it can be used to assist with retention of racially and ethnically minoritized students in school psychology💡

📚 Experiences of School Psychologists in Pediatric Medical Settings 📚 I had the pleasure of presenting with these 3 Latina Doctoras, all of us with overlapping journeys of being non-traditional school psychologists. We have each landed in medical settings, workplaces not commonly associated with school psychologists! During this presentation, we shared about the history of pediatric school psychology, state of the field, how to market our amazing competencies as school psychs, and personal experiences with maintaining our professional identity 💡
