Getting started on a novel comes down to two big upfront choices: the project and its five story elements (character, world, conflict, theme and plot). Because every early choice is provisional, the stakes are low, so commit until something better comes along. Choose a project driven by passion rather than market trends, set your level of ambition, and make sure the idea gives you enough raw material. Then use the universal story template, lead with conflict rather than plot, and let coherence narrow your options. Start with whichever element excites you most, add the others, and tell the story aloud as a Minimum Complete Story (MCS). Once you can, your sketch is done and your first loop is underway.
