About the evolution of the piano: Invented in Padua, Italy, by renowned harpsichord maker Bartolomeo Cristofori in the 1700s, the piano was initially called the gravicembalo col piano e forte, or “harpsichord that plays soft and loud.” The name referred to the instrument's ability to change its volume according to the pressure on the keys. This eventually became known as the fortepiano derived from the Italian words ‘forte’ for loud and ‘piano’ for soft.

The composer J.S. Bach was one of the first owners of a fortepiano. This was a fairly primitive model that had pedal mechanisms controlled by the pianist’s knees. This pianoforte still survives and is kept in a museum.

It was the pedal that really developed the success of the pianoforte because it made the sound ring and reverb in the room it was being played in, making it a very popular instrument of the time.

The invention of the sostenuto pedal (1844), the patent of cross-stringing (1859), invention of duplex scaling (1872) and the standardisation of the 88-key format during the 1880s and 1890s were all notable additions to the earlier piano models.
