Hey I do things

Our latest video is live! Join us for an inspiring and in-depth chat with RockitSage -science communicator, professor, the original pioneer of science on Twitch, and geologist—as she shares her incredible journey from a childhood dream of marine biology to studying volcanic rocks under scanning electron microscopes. Sage opens up about growing up close to nature, discovering geology in college, and why she’s passionate about sharing science online. From holding moon rocks and analyzing core samples from abandoned oil wells, to her work with CO₂ sequestration and the art-science crossover of mineral photography, this conversation is packed with stories, insight, and a lot of rocks (the exciting kind)!

Ice, ice baby. Carbon dioxide ice, in this case.

These snowy dunes of Mars are covered in a layer of carbon dioxide ice, also known as dry ice. The ice on Mars will undergo the process of sublimation (when a solid turns directly to gas, bypassing the liquid phase). In this image, the darker red spots show where sublimation has already exposed parts of the dunes.

Carbon dioxide ice requires temperatures below -190°F to form, which is why it doesn’t form naturally on Earth. Since Mars’ surface is, on average, -85°F, carbon dioxide ice and frost are typically only seen at the Red Planet’s poles, under cloud cover, or at night.

Fladik lovers, I have an exciting announcement to make…

For my next Zine project I am proud to announce that I am currently undertaking a 30-Album challenge featuring none other than (the one and only) Frank Zappa! SURPRISE! That’s right - just like Johnnie, before the start of November this year, I was completely unfamiliar with the works of Frank Zappa, so we're doing it again!! The ZC is back too with a completely new list of albums and films… and he didn’t even need to change his name! ;-)

The reason I hadn’t announced this sooner is that the ZC is not as hard-core a fan of Frankie as he is of Johnnie - he responds to my reviews with his corrections and annotations on a literal daily basis, and we wanted to be absolutely sure that we were both able to maintain the passion and enthusiasm for the project before releasing anything. I am currently sitting on Day 17, and having penned 20,000 words already, I can safely say that Frankie’s spirit is with us, and the magic is well and truly there… again!
