Finally got back on the Toulonnais with my new strobes to make a new model. More about my thoughts on these strobes in the next few days. created from 2500 images.

Good body position is not something a diver should have to force.

Trim describes a diver’s angle and orientation in the water. It is closely connected to buoyancy, but the two are not the same: a diver can be neutrally buoyant while still working against a head-up or feet-up tendency.

Movement can also hide imbalance. Finning, sculling, or holding muscular tension may create the appearance of stable trim, but the better test comes when movement stops.

Stable trim develops when buoyancy, equipment configuration and a relaxed, streamlined posture work together. This reduces drag, supports efficient propulsion and gives the diver—and the team—a more stable platform for communication, awareness and additional tasks.

Consider three questions:

• Does your body position change when you stop moving?
• Are you relaxed, or are you holding yourself in position?
• What happens to your trim when task loading increases?

Good trim should support the dive, not demand constant attention.

In scuba diving, buoyancy control matters most when you are no longer thinking only about buoyancy.

A diver may appear stable while making constant corrections with the fins, hands, breathing, or buoyancy system. But when attention shifts to checking gas, communicating with a teammate, managing equipment, or solving a problem, those corrections become harder to maintain.

Strong buoyancy control works together with trim and efficient propulsion. It reduces effort, helps protect the underwater environment, and leaves more attention available for awareness, communication and decision-making.

Improvement comes from returning to the fundamentals: practise regularly, focus on one area at a time and use feedback from teammates, instructors or video.

Technical diving may look like a natural next step for some divers, but being interested in it and being ready for it are not quite the same thing.

Readiness goes beyond the number of dives in your logbook. Are your foundational skills stable when the workload increases? Can you stay aware of your team while managing your own responsibilities? Are you prepared to follow a disciplined plan and call the dive when conditions, equipment, or the team require it?

Technical diving adds complexity, but the goal is not to become comfortable with chaos. It is to build the skills, judgment, and teamwork needed to manage that complexity calmly.

Before asking, “Which technical course should I take?”, it may be worth asking: “𝗔𝗺 𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻?”
