The five stages of death and dying, designed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, were groundbreaking in their time. They gave dignity to those facing terminal illness and transformed how we care for the dying.  But somewhere along the way, society made a crucial error: we took those stages and applied them to grief. And grief is not the same as dying. Grief is a distinct emotional experience. It’s not linear. It doesn’t follow a tidy progression. Yet professionals across fields—mental health, ministry, social work—are still being taught to apply a model never intended for the grieving.  That’s why so many feel broken when they don’t “fit” the stages. Recovering from a significant emotional loss is not an easy task. Me, a certified grief recovery specialist still struggle with resistance. Taking the actions that lead to recovery require my attention, open-mindedness, willingness, and courage. Today, 24 days later, I mustered the courage to take those actions so that I can remember my daddy from a happy place and not a place of pain. 💜

Every loss feels intense when it happens, experienced fully in the moment. However, when we look back, we realize that some losses affect us more deeply than others. This is partly because relationships are defined by both the time shared and the depth of the connection.💔
