Tips, tricks and guidance on teaching your kids Hindi!

Photos from MadamHindi's post 11/09/2021

A little explanation of the various ways to say “you” in Hindi

This is a simple concept you can teach your kids and have them start using right away

This is one of the many examples of how South Asian culture ties into language

Respect for elders is very important and is reflected in how various relationships are addressed in the language

Try to seek out examples of this in Bollywood music or movies, point them out to your kids so they understand the context of these words

Let me know how it goes!
Cheers!

Some basic info about Diwali

Biggest festival in South Asia, only celebrated by about 9 billion people (!)

There’s tons of info about Diwali online to learn more about this very important South Asian festival

There are so many ways to celebrate, and no right or wrong way!

Pick a set of traditions and make Diwali your own

I add new things every year! Sometimes a craft activity with the kids, sometimes a new festive recipe and sometimes just playing loads of Bollywood music and having fun decorating the house!

How will you celebrate Diwali this year?

Cheers!

Diwali is coming!! (Thursday to be exact)
Little video to help practice our verbs and use some fun Diwali vocab!

Like paatakheh! Don’t you love when a word is really just a representation of a noise?!

Indians sometimes use the word “Pataak!” to describe a loud noise like fireworks or something falling

I’ll be posting a vocab sheet soon, if you get on my email list, you’ll get a free download of the Diwali vocab sheet right in your inbox! (Link in bio)

Happy (almost) Diwali!! More to come!
Cheers!

It’s that time of year!!

Festival season in India is gearing up!

We’ve already had Navratri and now we’re heading into the 5-day Diwali celebration!!

Such a fun and exciting time of year when we celebrate with so many special and varied traditions

One pretty standard way of celebrating across all them is with sweets! The blanket name for South Asian sweets is “mithai”

However there are so many types of mithai!

Some made with milk and some without

Some with flavorings of rose, cardamom, pistachio and even chocolate!

A few names are: jalebi, kaju katli, barfi, kalakand, peda, ladoo, gulab jamun, ras malai, ras gulah

If you live near an Indian market, see if you can find and try some Indian sweets, this is the best time of year to do it!

Do you have a favorite Indian sweet?

Cheers!

Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin is “kaddoo” in Hindi, which I think really refers to all squash

My kiddos made this with minimal help!

Lots of “ew, gross” moments during the scraping out of the seeds!! Lol

Hope you have a fantastic Halloween! It’s one of my fav holidays of the year

Used to go as the old “Indian princess” almost every year as a kid (Immigrant parents never bought costumes!)

But I would have gone as a sack as long as I collected all that candy!!

Are you dressing up this year? What is your costume?!

I’m not the only one who lies to their kids right?
RIGHT??
LOL
I used to tell them they would get ARRESTED if they kept the light on in the backseat!!!

This is how we watch Hindi movies (Dhamaal in this case)

Watch and learn and watch and learn

Bollywood movies are so perfect for the weekend and such a fantastic opportunity to listen to native speakers

Even if you kids just listen, it’s so incredibly beneficial

They are hearing Hindi with native accents, learning pronunciation, and picking up Hindi in context

Let them soak it in! This one is a particularly funny movie too, lots of silly laughs

I’ve posted lists of good Bollywood movies for kids, check it out and try one of them on a weekend, see how your kids like it!

Cheers
