Hypervigilance has great branding — from the outside it just looks like drive.

But inside it's constant bracing. Tracking tone shifts, the subtle ways people pull back. Telling yourself you're just observant. Meanwhile your body is just trying to stay ahead of the drop.

And the painful loop is — the less you let people hold things, the less you know if they would. So you trust even less and just do it all by yourself.

You may recognize this pattern — and if you do, you know from experience that its difficult and slow to just try and "do it differently." Its too scary, and there are too many knee-jerk ways your body and mind avoid the vulnerability of being held.

In my experience, it is much faster (and much more painless) to change your emotional imprints around receiving first — to get your body to FEEL that being supported is just... normal.

I used to think that if I was generous enough, people would meet my needs in return.

But the reality is, giving and receiving are not the same movement.

Meaning that, no matter how much emotional or financial support I gave to others, that wasn't going to start coming back to me just because I gave it in the first place.

Particularly because I was giving because I didn't feel I deserved to receive.

I felt like I had to earn things, or do penance for being unworthy, or whatever.

It took me many years to work through this unwillingness to receive. But at this point, I have collected and refined a few different exercises that I've found to be by far the most powerful for healing this painful relationship to receiving.

I use them all the time, because like me, so many of my clients tend to be over-givers, over-performers. People that try their best and are generous, but struggle to receive in return.
