What is an emotional grownup?

ChatGPT
An emotional grownup refers to an individual who has developed a high level of emotional maturity and self-awareness. It is someone who can navigate their emotions effectively, respond to challenging situations with composure, and maintain healthy relationships with others.

Emotional grownups have acquired various traits and skills that contribute to their emotional maturity. They are generally capable of understanding and regulating their emotions, which means they can identify their feelings, express them appropriately, and manage them in a healthy way. They take responsibility for their emotions and actions, recognizing that they have control over their responses to different situations.

Furthermore, emotional grownups possess empathy and compassion towards others. They can understand and relate to the emotions and perspectives of those around them, fostering stronger connections and healthier relationships. They are also able to communicate effectively, expressing their thoughts and emotions clearly while actively listening to others.

In addition, emotional grownups have developed resilience and adaptability. They can cope with setbacks and challenges, bouncing back from difficult experiences with a positive mindset. They understand that life is filled with ups and downs, and they have the ability to navigate through those fluctuations while maintaining their emotional well-being.

Overall, being an emotional grownup entails having a high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to handle emotions in a mature and constructive manner. It is a valuable quality that allows individuals to lead more fulfilling and balanced lives, both personally and in their relationships with others

Psychological Flexibility is THE Super-Skill of Well-Being
While psychological rigidity has been linked to a number of mental health diagnoses, psychological flexibility (PF) may be the shining star of resilience and well being. It is the ultimate Super-Skill! PF is “a primary determinant of mental health and behavioral effectiveness.”

This super skill is the ability to maintain gentle and kind awareness of the present moment and take action, based on your values and goals. In other words, it is a kind of meta-awareness of all the components on the Dashboard of your Mind-Body Vehicle, from which you take actions towards your own True North.

Reams of studies have shown this one ability is found in those who are functioning well and getting stuff done! It has been studied in many forms for decades.

But more recently, it has gained more notoriety as the bedrock of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence supported intervention for everything from severe mental illness to leadership and organizational wellbeing. Steven Hayes, ACT’s founder, defines psychological flexibility as the ability to “make contact with experience in the present moment fully and without defense.”

So, who wouldn’t wanna build this super-skill? Get the full blog at mindful-mastery.com/blog. Or better yet, get on your own path to psychological flexibility by getting the book😃⬆️ link in bio ⬆️ https://mindful-mastery.com/psychological-flexibility-the-super-skill-for-mastering-stressful-periods-of-change/-

Needing some motivation this Monday? Check your internal compass to find your values. For a LOT of people, finding and knowing what we care deeply about can take some time. Usually, that’s because we’ve learned to avoid, control or cover up our feelings so well, we have lost the trail on how to listen to our feelings and emotions as directions to what we care about.

One fun way to start listening to your heart and gut (rather than all that mind programing) is to find and follow your ‘Aha moments’. Next time you are hemming and hawing about a decision, notice. Maybe you are not connecting, maybe this is not where you belong?

To start reconnecting, try this exercise from the book. Find 3 songs, one that makes you angry, one that makes you happy, and one that makes you sad. While in that emotions, see if you can identify what comes to mind around that emotion. These will be important clues for what you care about. Follow them. They might just lead you to your purpose.

I love Ana Maria’s work because she’s not the typical ‘standard template’ kind of Life Coach. She’s more like a Healing Strategist with a thirst for problem solving and a keen passion for root-cause solutions. She has been in the eye of the storm herself and knows exactly what it’s like to be eager for relief, while drowning in despair. She transformed her own pain into purpose. And now she serves others.

Her go to practice - for when you’re triggered - targets both your nervous system and your thoughts. It’s how she helps her clients (and herself) get back into what @drdansiegel calls your ‘window of tolerance’. A space where you can think more clearly and cope more effectively.

So next time you’re triggered, hit that L pose with legs up the wall, practice your paced breathing (you can see how to do that in our Jan 10 th post), and check in with those thoughts to see how your mind might be contributing to the overwhelm.

Do you do any part of this practice already? Did you try it? We’d love to hear your experience.
