MEN DESERVE THEIR FLOWERS
It’s Valentine’s week. Flowers everywhere. Cards. Gestures meant to signal care and appreciation. Even in q***r spaces, there’s a familiar rhythm to how love gets marked.
And it’s made me think about something simple: How rarely men give flowers to other men. Not as a romantic move. Just as a way of saying, I see you. I appreciate you. I’m glad you’re in my life.
What stays with me isn’t the flowers themselves, but how unusual the gesture still feels. How often appreciation between men lives quietly, felt, but unnamed. How rarely it’s offered directly, without a reason or a role to justify it.
I don’t usually subscribe to Valentine’s Day rituals. But I do appreciate what this moment brings into focus: Acknowledgment doesn’t have to be complicated and celebration doesn’t need to land on a specific date.
This week, I’ve sent 7 men flowers. They are not my lovers, but rather friends, mentors, and colleagues I deeply value and admire. Men who hold communities and families of their own in ways that deserve flowers to celebrate them.
So here’s an invitation, if you’re open to it. This week, consider sending flowers to a man in your life. A friend. A brother. A mentor. Someone who’s mattered to you, even if you’ve never quite said that out loud.
It doesn’t have to be perfect, just speak the truth of how they have impacted you.
Just send them and Notice what it’s like to offer appreciation plainly. Notice how it’s received. And if you’re the one receiving flowers, notice what it feels like to let that care land, without deflecting it.
Flowers won’t change how men relate to one another overnight, and, they’re a generous place to begin.
Big love,
xC
