Form #5 Ki Hap 기합 氣合 Hyung Sae
When I first started learning Hapkido, we were taught there were no forms or pre-arranged set of motions. This was characteristic of original Hapkido. Since that time, many schools and Kwans developed Hapkido forms. Many of these forms are a mishmash of cobbled techniques of blocking, striking, kicking, ho shin sul – joint locks, throws, etc., developed without the extremely high level understanding of Hapkido techniques. They mimic other styles such as Taekwondo, Karate, etc.
I was a firm believer in the “don’t bother learning forms and limiting yourself” camp until I started training under my late master, GM MYUNG Kwang S*k. I began studying and training in the forms that he developed. Over the course of several decades, I have developed much more appreciation of the genius, mastery and codification of the original KHA curriculum that he helped developed which are now preserved in the forms that he developed.
There are unique advantages to incorporating forms including systematic learning of techniques in the correct sequence, ability to practice Hapkido techniques without a partner which are to supplement, not replace, training with a partner.
GM MYUNG’s forms have unique characteristics such as non-repetitive movements which are also aligned with the order of techniques learned at various levels.
This is the 5th form to reach 1st dan black belt. The form is a result of combining the use of energy and power. The other power training methods, inner and outer must be mastered before learning this form. This form includes special advanced kicks and defensive throwing techniques. The direction of movement is forward to back, to the right and left, short moves to the right and left, and then back fowards resembling a cross with a smaller cross towards the bottom.

The Knife Arm
I have published this at least 2, 3 times. I will continue to post it because it is one of the most fundamental Hapkido techniques performed incorrectly by 90% of master and students. Failure to understand the technique forces nonsense "set ups", "preemptive strikes", wrong hand work foot work leading to a cascade of errors that forces unnecessary and superfluous movements and missing attacks before the knife arm is applied.
