Sunday afternoon new, current students, alumni, and their families met at The Harvard Latino Students & Alumni Tardeada to send off Harvard-bound Latinx Americans as a community. We each have the ability to address retention issues. Fingers-crossed as we experiment to increase retention, stay curiosity, and thrive in progress as a minority majority country by 2043. HARVARD COMES TO LYNWOOD
On April 6, 2017, The Harvard Radcliffe Club of Southern California and Harvard Latino Alumni Alliance sponsored the Early College Awareness Program at Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School in Lynwood Unified School District.
Approximately 150 students and parents participated in this event, which included: a presentation on The Road To College by Dr. Gus Frias and Ms. Jessica Gamboa, a keynote speech on Parents As Partners by former HAA President Cynthia Torres. Dr. Maria Covarrubias subsequently moderated a panel of Harvard Graduates that included Ms. Anne Kim, Dr. Sonia Molina DMD MPH, Mr. Leonard Cueva, Ms. Marisol Ramirez and USC graduate Natividad Vazquez. These graduates shared brief versions of their life stories and provided information on how to prepare and succeed in college. Before the end of the program, all students were persuaded to take an oath, promising to develop the best of their abilities to attend college and use their education to improve their lives, their families and their communities. Parents, educators and Harvard alumni also made the commitment to help them succeed in these endeavors.
For further information on the Early College Awareness Program, contact Dr. Gus Frias at [email protected]. Thank you again to Joseph Nakhost for full event photography. www.josephnakhost.com
