Celebrating 25 Years - Facilitating Student & Family Educational Empowerment, Growth & Success

NWE and our signature HOUSE (academic, personal and leadership empowerment) methodology has established a footprint and built a network across the educational pipeline - University (undergrad and grad), Community College, K-12 - and across the region and state.

Sharing a visual (swag) sample of whom we have served since launching our practice in 2000. Grateful for the partners who have engaged us, particularly our long-term clients, and ALWAYS happy to represent and elevate their brands.

Whether long-term multi-service contracts, individual student or parent empowerment workshops, speeches and presentations, staff development and training or empowerment program development, we have elevated "empowerment" from a mantra or abstract idea to a defined, systematic, dynamic process with measureable short-term and long-term growth and success outcomes.

In year 26, we are still searching for potential stakeholders, clients and partners who unsatisfied with incremental progress and ambitious about facilitating transformational growth and success in collaboration with the students and families they serve.

Roots of GROW

Revisited the origins of our GROW - Greater Resources thru Organizing and Working - resident-driven community development methodology last Wednesday night.

As we re-engage the resident/ community empowerment side of our work, we found ourselves joining friends and colleagues in a space symbolic of our introduction to the practice of empowering residents as decision-makers and stakeholders in the use of the space and resources in their communities, the Dunbar Hotel on historic Central Avenue.

As we moved from Vernon-Central to Vermont-Manchester to Hyde Park to Leimert Park to Inglewood, our clients, colleagues, sponsors and partners enabled us to develop and evolve the practice of engaging residents and other stakeholders in a defined, intentional process of empowering themselves as decision makers in the use of the space and resources in their communities.

NWE has been for the past 25 years, primarily and Education consulting practice focused on empowering students and parents for growth and success.

We endeavor to grow the community development side of our consulting practice this year, so this event at the Dunbar, sponsored by the UCLA Alumni Association and co-sponsored by the UCLA Black Alumni Association was an unexpected but timely affirmation of the past and future of NWE's GROW methodology.

Celebrating 25 Years of Student/ Parent/ Community Empowerment

RIP Jawanza Kunjufu
His Feb 1987 visit to UCLA with Naim Akbar was a launchpad for our Student Initiated Student Empowerment program, the Black Student Alliance's Academic Supports Program (ASP). Our understanding of student retention and success was DIRECTLY informed by his brilliance.

This 2-day event organized by our program coordinator and delivered to a packed audience during my term as UCLA BSA Chair provided the foundation for our ASP philosophy and resulting methodology. Steps 1 and 2 of what became the HOUSE Method are visible on the chalkboard. This book was one of the first we used in student-driven staff training and program development.

In our work with other marginalized student groups, and in dialogue other educational philosophies, including Paolo Freire's critical pedagogy, we co-created the Holistic Student Empowerment approach. NWE has since refined and codified HSE as the HOUSE Method we use to this day. K-12, Parent Empowerment, Workforce and Staff/ Professional Development and Resident/ Stakeholder Empowerment applications have evolved in our work over the past 25 years.

South LA's Greatest Holiday Gift - It's Parents!
Empowered by CADRE

If the children are the future of our communities, then aren't those who nurture, support, advocate for, and facilitate their growth the greatest gift our communities can possibly have? CADRE empowers, organizes, and facilitates leadership among South LA's parents.

One of our greatest joys during the holidays is being gifted the opportunity to break bread and share time with CADRE's parents and their children at the annual Holiday Party. All we want for Christmas is the empowerment of South LA's parents and families.

Congratulations to CADRE's admin team, organizing staff, Core parents, and members on a year of capacity building and laying the foundation for the realization and full potential of South LA's greatest gift.

20-Year Celebration of a Community Driven Library

One of our very first consulting contracts was with the Health, Education, and Real Estate Development (HERD) non-profit EDC in Hyde Park. We were asked to involve the residents and stakeholders of the newly formed Hyde Park Organizational Partnership for Empowerment (HOPE) in a community-driven neighborhood development process to improve the quality of life in Hyde Park in South Los Angeles post-1992 Civil Unrest.

Creating a Comprehensive Community Development plan including proposals for social, economic, and land-use improvements in Hyde Park, we decided to leverage then-Mayor Richard Riordan's Library Improvement Plan to bring a first class public library to Hyde Park.

The result of 5 years of resident participation in organizing, site identification, site acquisition, site design, development and negotiation with city officials, was the opening in 2004 of the Hyde Park Library, later to be named for LA's first African American city librarian, Miriam Matrhews. Forever grateful to the Hyde Park community and the Los Angeles Urban Funders for my involvement with this project.

Joining the party!

The Annual UCLA Luskin Block Party that is. Really enjoyed engaging and reconnecting with the campus community I've long been a part of, but am just now an official member. A bonus was running into this next gen fellow

Though equally engaged as an educational consultant, I live and breathe urban planning and community development. I approach these two lanes of my consulting practice as inter-connected and complementary. Now, intent on facilitating the full combined impact of the growth and transformation of people through education and the growth and transformation of communities through planning and development.
