STEM jobs are growing at 1.7 times the rate of non-STEM jobs, and the U.S. is simply not producing enough candidates to fill them. Only 16% of high school seniors are interested in pursuing STEM careers, according to the Department of Education.
The Obama administration is investing millions of dollars to produce an additional one million STEM undergrads by 2022. But that would barely fill the projected shortage in STEM jobs.
To get more students interested, some universities are changing their approach.

If Karlie Kloss wasn't a star on the runway, she'd probably be pediatrician or an educator, and it's that interest in STEM topics and teaching that inspired her to launch a scholarship program last summer for 21 teen girls interested in coding.
The supermodel first became interested in coding by wondering how her favorite apps like Instagram worked. This prompted her to sign up for a class at the Flatiron School where she learned the basics of web applications and how to write code in languages like Ruby on Rails. And now she has created ‘Koding With Klossy’ to encourage girls to become more interested in STEM.

Research shows that children’s interests, ambitions, and skills can be shaped early on by the media they consume and the toys with which they play, potentially influencing everything from the subjects they choose to study to the careers they ultimately pursue.
For example, right now, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) industries offer some of the highest-paying, most in-demand careers – there are over 600,000 unfilled jobs in information technology alone – yet women hold only 29 percent of STEM jobs. Communities across America are also experiencing teacher shortages, and nursing is one of the fastest-growing professions – yet fewer than 25 percent of public school teachers and only 9 percent of nurses are men.

The study, which anonymously surveyed 3,200 engineers across four major companies (3M, Booz Allen Hamilton, Honeywell Aerospace and United Technologies Corp.), focused on values and perceptions of corporate culture in an attempt to find out why so many women leave jobs in the science, technology, engineering and math fields within a decade of entering the STEM workforce when their male counterparts do not. With that knowledge, SWE aimed to identify actionable steps companies in those fields can take to combat attrition among female employees.
