Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a family of enteroviruses that translate their genomes through the 5' untranslated region. Change that region and you change the virus.

Analysing all available 5'UTR sequences for coxsackieviruses A16, A71 and B3, researchers found A16 strains sort into four clusters that follow geography: China and Taiwan, the UK and Singapore, Kerala and Assam, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

🍄Happy ! There are millions of fungal species but only a few hundred that cause human disease. The main reason is heat.

Most grow best well below 37 degrees. Mammalian body temperature, combined with an active immune system, excludes the overwhelming majority. It is one of the leading explanations for why fungal disease is so much rarer in mammals than in insects, amphibians and plants.
