Can filmmaking become more therapeutic without becoming therapy?
“Can Film Be Healing?” is an important question for documentary, nonfiction, digital-storytelling, and VR creators. The answer requires more than placing a camera in front of a personal story.
Dr. Joshua L. Cohen’s trailer, “Video and Filmmaking as Psychotherapy,” invites discussion about psychologically informed storytelling and FILM/VIDEO-BASED THERAPY®; including the role of participant agency, relationship, consent, authorship, and context.
Reflective filmmaking may create opportunities for meaning-making, connection, and post-traumatic growth. But the camera is not the therapist, and filmmaking itself is not psychotherapy, diagnosis, treatment, or clinical care.
A responsible creative process asks: Who shapes the story? What choices remain with the participant? How might the experience change during editing, screening, or immersion in VR? Where might consultation with a qualified mental-health professional be appropriate?
