The Art of Aaron Blaise

Aaron Blaise is an animation feature film director and wildlife artist. Focused animal art, animation, concept design and art education.

For 21 years Aaron worked with Disney helping to create some of the greatest animated films ever made. During that time he worked as an animator or supervising animator on "The Rescuers Down Under", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "Mulan" and more. In 2003 he was co-director of "Brother Bear" for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.

After "Brother Bear" he helped to develop several projects but ultimately left Disney to pursue an opportunity back home in Florida. Aaron recently served as 2D Animation Supervisor and Character Designer for the "The Bear and the Hare" an advertisement loved by millions around the world.

This is Freddie. He’s a lazy bum, but a pretty great model.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with this new Why the Drawing Works series…taking one of my drawings and showing some of the design decisions underneath it.

In this one, I’m looking at the big line of action, the weight and gravity of the pose, the leading lines that bring us back toward the head and paws, Freddie’s expression, and some of the little anatomical details that make the whole thing believable.

I love being able to actually show these ideas instead of just talking about them.

Had a great time doing a paper animation demonstration on animating a jellyfish. The variety of underwater locomotion is vast.

drawing can feel alive before you ever add the details. In this first Why the Drawing Works breakdown, I’m using a sketch of my dog Achilles to show how rhythm, silhouette, balance and eye direction can hold an entire pose together.

These are the kinds of design decisions I’m always looking for when I draw animals—and I’m going to be breaking down a lot more of my work this way.

Dream come true. I was able to make it to Barnes and Noble and pick up the latest issue of National Geographic . Inside features a 6 page spread I was hired to produce on the life cycle of a male lion. I’ve wanted to illustrate for National Geographic since I was a kid. Never give up on your dream.

This shark started as a series of drawings on paper. Then I composited the animation into a digital environment and built an entire underwater world around him.

That’s what I love about animation. A pencil drawing can become anything.
