Kevin Zhao is the Senior Global Technical Specialist with Phenomenex (A Danaher company), located in Torrance, California, USA and has 5 years of experience in biochemistry research; 4 years Protein/Cancer research with CSULA-City of Hope Cancer Collaborative and over 6 years in Phenomenex. Mr. Zhao is currently in-charging global technical support from Phenomenex headquarters, and also provided direct technical support and advising for HPLC, GC, SPE method and application development for Global customers.
Mr. Zhao received his B.S. in Biomedical Science at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and earned his M.S. in Biochemistry at California State University, Los Angeles, and also earned a MBA at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Jessica Alvarenga began her career at Northrop Grumman as a System Engineer supporting the Navigation and Positioning System (NAPS) division in Woodland Hills in 2017. She has served in various Agile System and Software development roles from Development Team Member to Product Owner for DO-178C/DO-331 airworthiness certification of a strap-down position, navigation and timing solution system used in manned and autonomous aviation platforms. She has also supported Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) for requirements verification, validation, integration and test of a gimbaled navigation and inertial measurement system. Recently, Jessica was selected for the Systems Engineering Associates (SEA) rotational program class of 2023, a professional and technical leadership development program at Northrop Grumman consisting of four rotations over a period of 2 years. Her current rotation is in RF design, modeling, simulation and analysis. Jessica also serves in various roles in the Adelante Employee Resource Group (ERG).
Jessica received her Bachelor and Master of Science from California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) in Electrical Engineering with a focus in Control Systems, Communications and Signals. She performed research in a NASA sponsored SPACE University Research Center at CSULA and post-grad research in the area of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) flight control.

Zilong Ye is an Associate Professor at California State University, Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He received his B.S. from Shandong University in 2007 and his M.S. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2010. His research interests lie in software-defined networking, network virtualization, optical networking, and data center networking

Cynthia Martel graduated from California State University at Los Angeles in 1990 with a B.S. degree In biology and biochemistry. She then entered the combined M.D.-Ph.D. program at the University of Southern California, from which she graduated in 1997 with an M.D. as well as a Ph.D. in physiology. She then completed a residency in internal medicine at LA County-USC Medical Center in 2000. This was followed by subspecialty training in hematology and medical oncology at the U. C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, completed in 2003. After working for two years in a private hematology/oncology practice in Southern California, Cynthia joined the City of Hope Medical Center at their satellite clinic in Pasadena, California, where she remained until 2011. From 2011 to 2021, she was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, and continued to practice hematology and medical oncology at that institution’s Pasadena satellite clinic. She left in 2021 to start her own private medical practice in Pasadena.

Dr. Trikha is the vice president and head of Oncology Early Development at AbbVie and responsible for advancing the oncology pipeline from discovery through clinical proof of concept. At AbbVie, he chairs the Early Development Advisory Council and is a member of multiple cross functional committees. He is a core member of AbbVie’s Oncology Licensing Committee and has initiated multiple new external collaborations. Dr. Trikha is also the Bay Area Site Head, responsible for defining and driving the mission and vision for AbbVie in the Bay Area and our future home in South San Francisco.
Prior to AbbVie he was President and Chief Scientific Officer, Head of Triphase Accelerator, Board member of Triphase and EnCycle Therapeutics. Over his 20 years of oncology drug discovery and development experience, Dr. Trikha helped discover three now approved cancer medicines and contributed to advancing multiple oncology programs while he was at Centocor/Johnson & Johnson, Genentech and Ambit. Dr. Trikha continues to focus his science interests in advancing first or best in class drugs, cell signaling, tumor immunology, apoptosis, protein homeostasis, CMC, PKPD, and developing biomarkers for predicting clinical response and toxicity. He received his B.S. from California State University, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. from University of Southern California and was an Assistant Professor of Research at Wayne State University prior to joining industry.

Are you interested in becoming a mentor? The 2022- 2023 LSAMP Transfer Mentor Program (STEM-focused) is a great opportunity for current Cal State LA students to build a sense of community, gain leadership and mentoring skills, and give back to the community through helping and aspiring incoming freshmen and transfer students to reach their academic potential to prepare them for a successful career in STEM. Because this academic year will begin remotely, much of the training and meetings required by the program will be remote until we are all clear to return to campus.
Requirements:
• STEM major
• Cal State LA students/ Transfer students (As of the academic year 2022-23)
• 2.5 + GPA
Program Expectations:
• Attend all training and meeting
• Establish and maintain regular contact and communication with your mentees (virtually, over a video call, Zoom, text, social media, etc.)
• Participate at an End of the Year Focus Group
Benefits
• Mentors will receive a stipend ($100) and certification from the mentoring training
• If matched with mentees, mentors will receive an end of the year stipend ($400/ semester, $800/ academic year )
• A great time working with a team and developing your leadership abilities
Time Commitments
• Mentors must commit to participating in LSAMP from June 2022-May 2023.
• Mentors are required to attend training, which will take place in May 2022
• Mentors are expected to maintain monthly communication with their mentees, via phone, email, social media, etc.
• Mentors are expected to check in with the program director monthly and turn in any necessary assignments on time.
