It was Animation Week! First we had a great class visit from John Derderian, Netflix VP, Animated Series + Kids & Family TV. Then we toured Disney Animation Studios with DiLA alum Lizzet Clifton, now a Software Engineer there. Thanks so much to both!

This week’s guest for our Culture Industries class was Duke in LA alum Cara Nicole, speaking about the creator economy and her journey as a full-time content creator. Other memorable alumni speakers have included Andre Woolery (marketing and branding) and Robb Chavis & Jeff Drayer (screenwriting). We’ve gained so much insight by having them on the other side of the classroom!

LETS HERE FROM A DILA HIGHLIGHT: SHANKUL
Explain why you decided to do this program.
I found out very early in my interest in filmmaking that much of the skills in this industry are taught on the job. I knew I had to take advantage of this amazing Duke program to come to the core of the entertainment industry: LA. It was only right. I will say this experience has been nothing but fulfilling and has helped me figure out my plan for the rest of Duke, but also for after graduation, which to a lot of students is scary matter in of itself. I cannot recommend this program more for anyone who wishes to pursue careers in the creative industries.
What is your favorite memory from your study away experience?
My favorite part about the Duke in LA program was my internship. I was a production intern at SixTwentySix productions. My favorite part of my internship was getting to be on set. I helped on a commercial for LesserEvil, Priceline, American Express, as well as a music videos for Girlset and Stephen Christopher. I met incredibles celebrities like Atsuko Okatsuka and Keke Palmer. When I was not given a task, I got to observe and ask questions about how everyone worked together for these films – like every gear in its place making the machine work.
