Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Kentucky, USA. He grew up in a poor family and worked hard to educate himself by reading books and studying independently. Before becoming president, Lincoln worked as a lawyer and served in the Illinois state legislature and the U.S. Congress.
Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States in 1861 during one of the most difficult periods in American history — the American Civil War. He is best known for preserving the Union, ending slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation, and promoting equality and freedom.
Lincoln delivered some of the most famous speeches in American history, including the Gettysburg Address. His leadership, honesty, and determination made him one of the most respected presidents in U.S. history.
Sadly, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. He died the following day, April 15, 1865.
