Our study participants who are living with and without HIV have contributed to over 35 years of groundbreaking discoveries in the field of HIV research. Our study participants have been critical to life-saving discoveries, and their continued participation is central to further HIV research.
Since 1984, more than 12,000 people have participated in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study and the Women’s Interagency HIV Study (now known as MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study). Investigators can request access to over 35 years of data and biospecimens including serum, plasma, cells, hair, and urine.

The study is designed to investigate a spectrum of questions relating to the basic science, clinical science, and epidemiology of HIV infection in the U.S., with a focus on comorbidities among men and women living with HIV. Major areas of investigation include:
• Cardiovascular and pulmonary
• Neuropsychological
• Aging
• Cancer
• Psychosocial
• Health disparities

There are 4,106 men and women enrolled in the MACS and WIHS studies that will soon transition to the MWCCS study. Participants come from all over the United States and have contributed over 35 years of interviews and samples to the study. Through sustained partnership with our participants, the MWCCS hopes to continue advancing research and knowledge about HIV comorbidities and to help improve the lives of those living with HIV.
