President John F. Kennedy was in high spirits as his motorcade entered Dallas' Dealey Plaza just before 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963. As the crowds of onlookers began to cheer, First Lady of Texas Nellie Connally turned to the back seat of the limousine to remark, "Mr. President, you can't say Dallas doesn't love you." "No, you certainly can't," Kennedy replied.
Then three shots rang out. In the words of Alan Smith, a 14-year-old local schoolboy who had skipped class just to see the president:
"Mr. Kennedy had a big, wide smile. When he was hit, his face turned blank—no smile, no frown. Nothing. He fell over Jackie's knees and didn't say anything. She stood up screaming, 'God, oh God, no!' There was blood all over her and everything. It made me weak."
