"Proposal Deadline Extended to March 31"

The Association of Cuban Pedagogists and the University of Cienfuegos invite
students, educators, researchers, and other professionals with related interests to
Cuba to participate in our unique space to learn, reflect and share the application of
the pedagogical philosophy of the Great Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire. The deadline for proposals is extended through March 31.

Cuban physician Carlos Finlay was the first to identify the theory that mosquitoes transmitted yellow fever in 1881. It took Walter Reed to prove Finlay’s original theory which resulted in the treatment and near eradication of the disease making construction of the Panama Canal feasible.

Collaboration between the people of the United States and Cuba has always served as a catalyst for innovation and cultural transformation in both our societies. There are hundreds of such examples from the last 60 years alone. Some of you have been a part of it. All of this is now under threat.

When people from the United States and Cuba come together as equals and with mutual respect, both communities prosper. Even in the 21st century, the people of Cuba and the United States continue to collaborate for mutual benefit. A notable example is the CIMAvax-EGF lung cancer vaccine, currently undergoing clinical trials at Roswell Park in Buffalo, NY. GPS meteorology cooperation between the United States and Cuba has advanced geophysical research, education, and enhancing data collection and forecasting effectiveness. Professors, researchers, and students continue to come together to learn from each other and improve their own communities.

The US government has affirmed that it intends to punish countries that try to sell oil to Cuba, a country that does not generate its own crude. The current actions is harming and will eventually starve millions of Cubans including our professors, students, friends, and colleagues. Imagine your day without gas or electricity? Cuba is NOT a threat to the US.

What can you do? We need to let our representatives know that we care about Cuba and its people.

Write to your local representative. Reach out to organizations that are trying to make a difference.
