"We are saddened to inform you that our friend and brother Floyd Black passed away on September 28th, 2020 in Los Angeles, California. Floyd majored in History and graduated from the College of Arts & Science with the University of Virginia Class of 2019. At the time of his passing, Floyd was pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Policy at Pepperdine University with plans on returning to South Central Los Angeles to address educational inequality and serve his community.
Floyd was known to many as a peer, classmate, friend, and leader in the university community. He served as the UVA Class of 2019 president in his second year, was a Meriweather Lewis Fellow, and participated in The Big Brothers program through the Men's Leadership Project. He touched the lives of many on grounds at University of Virginia and his hometown of Los Angeles. His capacity for service was remarkable and his loyalty as a friend was unmatched. We will truly and dearly miss his company and presence. Floyd’s legacy will always be felt and our community must grow, learn and better ourselves through Floyd’s passing as that’s what he would have wanted. We mourn the loss of a beloved member of our community and that void will never be filled.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Floyd’s parents, family members and loved ones, his many friends, UVA classmates, and faculty whose lives he impacted in a positive way. Throughout these difficult and tragic times, please take care of yourselves and reach out to all who need discussion and healing." - via Family and Friends of Floyd Black
