Shimon bar Yohai (the rabbinic figure at the center of the teachings of the Zohar, the central text of Jewich mysticism). Join us for this spiritual ascenscion, with R. Sacks guiding us into another sonic dimension as we contemplate Zoharic wisdom along the way.

"THE (nearly unlimited) POWERS OF A KING" - Hadar's Pico-Robertson Beit Midrash

Tomorrow night at 7:00pm at the Workers Circle at 1525 S. Robertson Blvd.

This year we’ve been learning through Nezikin, the section of the Talmud devoted to justice. We started with civil law — property, damages, privacy — and now, as we enter Tractate Sanhedrin, we turn to criminal law, capital cases, and the larger structure of courts and government… including the laws of a King.

In a moment when so many of us are thinking about the scope and limits of executive power, it is is a good time to dive into the ancient Jewish debate about authority, governance, and political responsibility.

Join us for some singing, cholent, and Talmudic political theory.

HANUKKAH BEIT MIDRASH - TOMORROW NIGHT!

Join me Thursday night, 7pm, at the Workers Circle for a special Hanukkah Edition of Hadar's Pico Robertson Beit Midrash. We continue our study of Seder Nezikin, the section of the Talmud that deals with Principles of Justice and Civic Responsibility - but Hanukkah will make a surprise appearance in our case.

As always, we will do some singing and eat some cholent, and this time, we will include a candlelighting and sufganiyot. Together we'll keep the light of Torah alive in the darkness.

Hanukkah is coming! Join Hadar this Sunday night, 6:30pm at Der Nister for 'Illuminations: Philosophy and Faith from Athens to Jerusalem.'

As we kindle the first light of Hanukkah, we’ll explore another kind of illumination: the meeting of Greek philosophy and Jewish wisdom. Using Leo Strauss’s “Between Jerusalem and Athens” as a point of departure, we’ll study classical Jewish sources that probe the tension between reason and revelation — and consider why this encounter still matters. Der Nister's Rabbi Ye'ela Rosenfeld and Hadar's Rabbi David Kasher will teach. We’ll celebrate the night with candle lighting, latkes, and sufganiyot!
