Hello everyone, I wanted to share my TOEFL experience with you in the hopes of helping anyone currently preparing to take the exam. Kindly note that this is going to be a long post so please bear with me.
First of all, I live in Syria; therefore, the TOEFL home edition was the only exam I had access to; however, after taking the exam, I would definitely recommend it to everyone.
I should also mention that I was extremely stressed for time as I only had two weeks to prepare so I wanted to utilize the limited time I had to focus on strategies since my linguistic skills were already excellent.
For resources, I headed to YouTube and found a channel called TST Prep with several amazing videos on tips and strategies for the exam, which were more than enough for me.
It is worth mentioning that they also offer online courses; however, the videos were all I needed and honestly I did not have time for anything beyond that, but you might want to explore that option if you think that you need it.
This is the link for the TST Prep YouTube Channel:

Personally, I struggled with one section, which was the speaking section, only because I am someone who speaks a lot and I struggled to stick to the 45/60 seconds time limit so I watched one video on speaking tips other than TST videos:

After that, I took a few practice tests on TOEFL Bank. I liked that the website allowed you to review your answers and see where you made mistakes; however, I struggled with the reading section and I kept getting a low score (24-28), and even after reviewing my answers I was not convinced that they were wrong, so I talked to a friend who had taken test and he assured me that he went through the same thing. His reading score on TOEFL Bank was low; however, his score in the actual exam was higher.
Only after taking the test and joining this group did I realize that their reading passages were translated and therefore were not entirely accurate, so my instinct was right after all.
I would still recommend using TOEFL Bank for practice tests; however, I would not recommend relaying on their scoring system.
Now since I was taking the test at home, I wanted to ensure that everything was prepared beforehand, so I downloaded the test application and watched a couple of videos on YouTube:

For the test itself, I started with the reading section, and that was where I made my one mistake. I should have listened to Josh from TST Prep when he said that you should only skim the reading passages instead of reading them fully; however, when I was using the TOEFL Bank, I read the passages fully and still had time left.
The one difference between the TOEFL Bank and the actual exam is that on the TOEFL Bank, I was reading the paragraphs in the passages one by one as I was answering the questions; however, on the actual exam, you had to read the full passage before being allowed to proceed to the questions which was why the reading part took so long and the timer ran out whilst I was clicking on my final answer and I lost that one point!!
For the listening section, everything went smoothly as this was always the easiest section.
For the speaking section, as I mentioned before I struggled a bit with the time limit and had to speak a bit faster to manage it.
For the writing section, as you can clearly see from this post, I like to write a lot. For the integrated writing task, I wrote 470 words while it is recommended that you write 150 to 200 words, and while I did not have enough time to look at the word count on my independence writing task; however, I am certain that I surpassed the 300 words count recommended by TOEFL.
P.S. I took the test on May 17 and received the scores on May 26 and then the PDF report on May 27.
So this was my experience with the TOEFL exam and I wish you all the best of luck with yours ❤️
