Today, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day -- a day to recognize the Indigenous people of the Philippines and the cultures, traditions, languages, stories, and ancestral lands they have carried and protected for generations.
But there is more to celebrate than what we see.
Behind every tradition is a people who continue to preserve it. Behind every piece of ancestral land is a community that calls it home.
Their mountains are not empty spaces waiting to be developed.
Their rivers are not dumping sites.
Their forests are not resources meant to be taken without consequence.
These are homes. They are sources of livelihood. They are part of a history that existed long before many of us arrived.
And when these places are damaged, something more than the environment is lost.
A community loses part of its home.
A culture loses part of its foundation.
A generation loses something it was supposed to inherit.
Indigenous culture should never be something we remember only when there is a celebration. It lives in the languages spoken, the stories shared, the traditions practiced, and the land that continues to hold them.
So today, let us celebrate with more than words.
Let us learn. Let us respect. Let us protect.
Because Indigenous Peoples do not simply have a place in our history.
They are part of our present--and they deserve a future where their land, culture, and identity can continue to thrive.
