“It's truly a blessing to be a part of Gen X! Volunteering at Angeles Mesa is a special treat for me. I was a student at "The Mesa" graduating 6th grade in 1968. My three daughters were "Mesa Bugs" and my granddaughters are currently students. So, this opportunity as a retiree is full circle for me!
I LOVE working with the students and supporting the teacher. The students have embraced me as part of the class. Today, I was happy to help a student who usually does not finish his assignments, complete his math problems. He was so proud to show the teacher!
Thank you GenX, for this opportunity to help invest in our children's futures.” - Anita Parnell, GenX Volunteer at Angeles Mesa Elementary School

GenX School Spotlight ⭐ Angeles Mesa Elementary School
In 2014, Angeles Mesa Elementary School started as a six-month pilot program with five volunteers and a start-up donation from a private donor. GenX then left Angeles Mesa in 2015 to expand its reach to other schools in South LA.
The program officially returned to Angeles Mesa in 2024 as the eighth school site with five new volunteers, who were excited to make a difference in the lives of the students by continuing to emphasize student-centered and inquiry based learning.
Our goal then and now continues to be to improve student literacy/math scores while boosting the health and well-being of senior volunteers.

“My volunteer duties continue to expand. I was the primary pumpkin carver (during the Halloween season). After I cut the tops off the pumpkins, I assisted the students in reaching down inside the pumpkin to collect as many seeds as they could, then I helped them count the number of seeds they collected.” - Alyce Shigg, GenX volunteer at Baldwin Hills Elementary
