SAGE - Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience

SAGE - Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience Learning geophysics by doing geophysics.

SAGE is an award-winning geophysics education and research program for undergraduate students, graduate students, and working professionals. Our mission is to actively educate students in all phases of geophysics using modern field equipment and the latest computer processing and interpretation tools. SAGE emphasizes the understanding of field methods—from fundamental principles through acquisition, processing, and interpretation—all within the context of basic and applied research problems.

Jacob Anderson, SAGE 2026 Teaching Assistant, fully represents the power of learning geophysics by doing geophysics.

Jacob first discovered SAGE while working at the U.S. Geological Survey, where he was introduced to geophysics on the job. Inspired by colleagues and mentors, he is now helping guide the next generation of geoscientists.

Swipe through to learn more about Jacob's journey and what makes the SAGE experience so impactful.

One of the most meaningful traditions at SAGE is the presentation of the Mental Attitude Award, affectionately known as "The Bernie."

Named in honor of Bernie Gilpin, one of the original SAGE faculty members when the program was established in 1983, the award recognizes the student who best embodies the qualities Bernie brought to every challenge: a positive attitude, determination, enthusiasm, leadership, and genuine care for others.

We are proud to recognize Leyla Namazie as the 2026 Bernie Award recipient.

Leyla stood out for her leadership within the group, her determination to connect the geophysics with the geology, and her caring nature that helped strengthen experience for everyone around her.

Congratulations, Leyla, and thank you for representing the very best of SAGE!

is officially a wrap.

Over the past few weeks, students, instructors, and industry mentors came together to tackle real geophysical challenges, learn new skills, build lasting connections, and advance our understanding of the Valles Caldera.

A huge thank you to our students, faculty, sponsors, alumni, and industry partners who make SAGE possible year after year.

We'll be sharing more highlights in the weeks ahead—and keep an eye out for exciting scientific results that will be presented at AGU this December.
