We're back with another game! In Walk the Plank, one fencer is a pirate, the other a pirate traitor, being made to walk the plank. The traitor must fight back to the ship or get a hit on the pirate in order to win. But beware! The plank is narrow and a step too far off-line will send you plunging into the drink below, right down to Davy Jones' Locker! ARRRRRRR

So your opponent won't take their blade off the line to give you a good opening? Or maybe they're preparing to attack and you want to throw them off? Beat the blade! Marcelli throws the beat with an advance step in the same tempo and the sword angled such that a cavazzione will take your opponent's weak straight into your strong. I'm very upset we have to use royalty free music because Beat It was right there...

Coach Mariana's Saturday class worked on hanging parries this past weekend. They're a great way to let your opponent's attacks just roll off your defense like rain off a roof!

Capes and canes and lanterns abound! Reed's new class on Fridays teaches the use of different offhand weapons from the popular buckler, to rotella, cape, and even lantern. Train your two-mindedness by working through how historical sources taught fencers to defend themselves with whatever they may have had on their person!

Another fencing game! In Slap-Happy, fencers measure such that the shorter reaching fencer can touch their partner's wrist, elbow, or shoulder and then both fencers must keep their back foot planted. It's Single-Stick for any weapon!

We have a new coach! Coach Reed started his historical combat career in SCA heavies and after decades of experience joined a club to study rapier. He now applies his HEMA rapier experience back to the SCA to great success in tournaments. Reed has been with MHFA from its start and will now be applying his interest for unconventional off-hand weapons to our new Friday class which will include sword with cape, rotella, lantern and more!

What a day! Fencers came from over twenty different clubs to compete in the Kings Cup Series event. Our largest event of the day was the Open, where Charlottesville HEMA's Piotr Przanowski took gold in a nail-biting sudden-death finish. Our closing event was the URG tournament, where Alexandra Faur, also of Charlottesville HEMA, worked her way to the top. And we opened our day with the Veterans' 40+ tournament, where Stephen Dougherty of Crossing Fight School was our winner. We saw a lot of very impressive today and are thankful to all our competitors for coming. Special shout-out to BD Madlinger, who has maintained his top position on our leaderboard, which you can find on our website!
