Homeschool Snark: Origins

Homeschool Snark: Origins The ORIGINAL Snark Shark Crew, still saying the things you never let yourself say (out loud). (Things like this always happen at midnight.) One month in: 7,777.

Snarky truthiness on homeschooling, unschooling, and tangentially related topics. One day, several of us were sitting around Facebook quietly snarking together and one of us mentioned an ACTUAL question she had heard from an ACTUAL mom: “What about curriculum for my 18-month-old child?” and her private, snarky answer just amongst ourselves was: “Any book will do! Just slap yourself with it.”

And

another of us loved that little bit of snark so much that she took that ACTUAL question and answer and made a graphic, purely for the amusement of our own little group, and somehow from there things took on a life of their own, and by midnight on January 30, 2015, the Homeschool Snark Shark had been conceived, gestated, and birthed. By midnight the next day, we had 100 likes. Two days later: 1,234. Three days after that: 2,468. And on our 5-year mark in 2020, we passed 50,000. Our original page was taken over in 2023 and we spent futile months trying to get it back. When nothing worked, we were gifted an existing page, The Homeschool Club, with 6,000 followers, so we didn't have to start from scratch. (Thank you, Evelyn!) Within a week we had added 500 new followers. We like you too. Homeschool Snark Shark is meant to be a place of refreshment for us and (we hope) every frustrated homeschooler and unschooler who has NOT slapped the next person to ask, “But what about socialization?”

Our motto is “everything you NEVER let yourself say,” so please understand these are NOT recommendations for handling questions about homeschooling, but rather just our friendly way to blow off steam amongst ourselves. This is a humor page, not outreach to potential homeschoolers. There are several of us on the Snark crew; some are out front interacting with our Chums (that’s you; you’re a Chum), and others behind the scenes generating the snark that you enjoy so much, but none of us could do it without the others. If a comment posted on our page or an idea you send to us inspires us to snark, you will receive a Chum of the Day credit! We hope you enjoy your daily serving of snark, and bon appetit from your friendly Snark Shark Crew!
