🎄 Merry Christmas! 🎄

During this time of year, I encourage all my students to “Give the Gift of Music”. There is so much unique and meaningful music available related to this season.

The holiday season music brings into focus a vast amount of music history—American, European, and from around the world. No other time of year has music based on tunes as old as the 8th century and as new as the melodies from current Christmas movies. Although the majority of our most-used Christmas Carols are from Europe, they are enriched by Appalachian Carols, Negro spirituals, popular songs, and hymns that are American. Other countries provide us many styles of music and textures such as the ”calypso” Feliz Navidad, Ukrainian Bell Carol, and a hauntingly beautiful, modal lullaby (Taladh Criosta) from the Hebrides islands.

The fall semester at Jergensens Music Studio has been dominated by preparation for auditions and participation in Multiple Piano Festival 2018 (a piano- duet gala). It is an especially unique event—the beauty of 12 black grand pianos on stage and the opportunity for students of all ages and levels to perform for an audience of more than 900 people. The experience of playing in a large ensemble, while following a conductor, is quite rare for piano students.😇

Teaching piano on Skype had added a new dimension to my studio--an adventure for myself as well as my students. 2016 was the second year of making this mode of teaching available and it works wells for those too far away to come to the physical studio.

Teaching music has continued to be a very important part of my life giving me the opportunity to be a part of the development of many very special students. As I graduate several more senior piano students this year, I delight in the memories and accomplishments of each one and look forward to hearing of their activities from time to time as they move into the new experiences ahead of them.

The second semester of the studio teaching year (2011-2012) has begun. The Classic Period of Music will be highlighted for special emphasis. Each student has selected a special piece to learn in the style of the period. Most of the more advanced students have choosen to play music created by the better known composers of the time; such as Mozart, Haydn, Mozart, and Diabelli. It is a challenge and a delight to perpare students to perform music of this quality and difficulty. Mrs. J

The fall semester included two very successful special events: Multiple Piano Festival and student's giving the "Gift of Music". The 13 students who auditioned for the festival were all selected to play in 24-person ensembles performing on 12 grand pianos. The combined number songs (gifts) played for others exceeded 1800 this year. Mrs. J

Summer study is almost over. I have two outstanding students that will have completed "hikes" on all 20 mountains by successfully meeting the prescribed musical skill building activity of each Musical Moutain. Congratulation, A. F. and A.T! Mrs. J

Summer piano study is at the midpoint. The motivational theme for this summer is Summer Musical Mountain Hikes. Each hike represents a prescribed part of a musical skill or activity. More than 50 hikes have been complete. Each hike represents focused effort and time by the student. I am delighted with the work my students have been doing. The top "hikers" will be recognized at the end of summer study.
