🎨 Hidden Treasure in İzmir: Ottoman Woman Artist Rediscovered

A painting that hung quietly on the wall of an İzmir home for over 50 years has now been identified as the work of Muide Esad, one of the first generation of female painters in the Ottoman Empire.

The artwork was gifted in 1972 to dentist Efe Erginer. For decades, it was admired as a charming Istanbul scene — hills of Kandilli, boats on the Bosporus, a woman in a ferace, and seagulls overhead. But a faint signature discovered with a magnifying glass revealed the name “Muide Esad.”

After years of research, the artist was confirmed to be the daughter of Professor Dr. Esad Işık Pasha and granddaughter of statesman Sadullah Pasha. In 1914, she became one of the first students enrolled at the Fine Arts Academy for Girls (today’s Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University), studying alongside pioneering women artists of her time.

Though largely forgotten in Turkish art history, this discovery restores Muide Esad’s place among the trailblazing women who helped open the doors of formal art education in the Ottoman Empire.

✨ A powerful reminder that history sometimes hangs quietly on our walls, waiting to be rediscovered.

Rare Late Roman mosaic with Solomon’s Knot discovered beneath modern İzmir 02/26/2026

Archaeological discovery in IZMIR

A large ancient mosaic floor was uncovered during excavations at the ancient city of Smyrna (modern-day Izmir) along the North Street of the Agora. The floor measures about 3 × 4 meters and features geometric panels with a central Solomon’s Knot motif.

Solomon’s Knot is a traditional interlaced symbol often interpreted in antiquity as a protective emblem; archaeologists believe it was used to guard against jealousy, envy or the “evil eye,” with other small cross motifs nearby supporting this protective interpretation.

This is the first new mosaic found at Smyrna in nearly 70 years, and while the exact function of the building where it was found (public space vs. private residence) isn’t yet clear, such mosaic floors were common in the Late Roman period (4th–6th centuries CE).

Remarkably, the mosaic was reused about 1,500 years later, in the 19th century, when structures like a nearby non-Muslim hospital or other buildings were constructed directly on top of the ancient floor, with later plaster laid over it.

Excavations are ongoing and may reveal additional structures as the site expands in 2026.

Long Beach breaks ground on waterfront amphitheater to be built near Queen Mary 01/19/2026

Long Beach officials have begun construction on a new 12,000-seat waterfront amphitheater next to the Queen Mary, which will become the largest waterfront venue of its kind on the West Coast. The $21 million project will transform an adjacent parking lot into the Long Beach Amphitheater, featuring 11,000 seats and space for 1,000 standing fans. City leaders say the venue is designed to pay for itself, funded by permit fees from nearby waterfront facilities with no ongoing cost to the city. Part of a broader plan to boost tourism and growth, the amphitheater is expected to host major concerts as early as August and September, though no official completion date has been announced.

Say Goodbye To Fine Dining, Authentic 'Soulful' Foodie Experiences Are In For 2026 01/14/2026

🍽️🇹🇷 This is not street food — this is culinary heritage elevated.

Turkey is quietly redefining what world-class dining means — not by copying French fine dining, but by honoring its own traditions at the highest level. One of the country’s most celebrated examples is a two-Michelin-starred Turkish restaurant that proves Anatolian and Ottoman-rooted cuisine belongs on the global elite stage.

Think meticulously prepared meze, regional ingredients, slow-cooked classics, and recipes that go back generations — now refined with the precision and respect of Michelin-level technique. It’s not about gimmicks or trends. It’s about protecting food memory, terroir, and culture and presenting it with dignity.

This is Turkey saying: our grandmother’s kitchen deserves a place among the world’s best.

When authenticity meets mastery, you don’t lose tradition — you elevate it.
