College admissions myths are everywhere 🔍

Admissions deans shared the ones they hear most:
• Myth: There's a "perfect" application.
• Fact: Authenticity beats an “ideal” essay response or extracurricular activity.
• Myth: Your essay needs to be about a traumatic experience.
• Fact: Most great essays are about ordinary moments.
• Myth: One great strength carries the application.
• Fact: Nearly every school reads applications holistically.

Admissions season is opening at a pivotal moment 📋

The Common App opened August 1, and several changes are picking up speed:

• More schools are dropping supplemental essays: a shift that's been building for a few years, with UNC, WashU, Tulane, and Georgia Tech recently joining the trend
• Acceptance rates keep dropping as application volume climbs year over year (many top schools now admit 5% or less)
• Early decision carries more weight than ever; schools lean on it more each cycle

We're here to help you find the strategy — and the schools — that fit your student. 💛

PSA for parents ⚠️

Once your child turns 18, you lose automatic access to their medical records, financial accounts, and academic information – even if you’re footing the bill.

Without the right paperwork in place, a financial aid question, housing contract, or medical emergency could be out of your reach.

Before they leave for college, make sure these 4 documents are signed:
• HIPAA Authorization
• Healthcare Power of Attorney
• Durable Power of Attorney
• FERPA Waiver

Not sure where to start? We're here. 🤍

Rising senior families, wondering what your student should do this summer to prepare for application season?
We've got you covered ☀️

• Fine-tune their college list: Make sure every school on their list is there for a reason. A strong list has a balance of reach, target, and likely.

• Start brainstorming essay topics: Summer is a great time to start brainstorming, journaling, and getting ideas on paper (or their notes app).

• Research financial aid deadlines by school: These can vary by school, and some are earlier than you'd expect. Build a tracker now so nothing sneaks up on you.

• Get familiar with specific application requirements: Applying to a program that requires a portfolio or audition reel? Use the summer to identify any specific requirements and refine their submissions.

• Think about letters of rec: Start identifying which teachers they'd like to ask in the fall, so they can hit the ground running the moment school starts.

Testing Update: UC's SAT/ACT debate now has a firm deadline, and it’s moving faster than expected.

UC's governing board has set a June 2027 target for a recommendation on whether the testing requirements will return to admissions. We'll keep you posted as this develops.

Rising junior families: be intentional with summer plans 🌴

Laying the groundwork this summer = a less stressful application process. Here's where to start:

• Start dreaming before researching. Encourage your student to ask, What kind of environment would I thrive in? Big campus or small? City or college town? Close to home or far?
• Get a feel for schools. Scope out their socials, student vlogs on YouTube, and student newspapers. Get a sense of campus culture beyond the brochure.
• Visit campuses when you can. Even a casual drive-through or walk around campus while traveling gives a real sense of a school's size, energy, and feel.
• Start a "brag doc" with everything they'll need to reference in applications: activities, jobs, volunteer work, awards, and passion projects.
• Make a testing plan: Will they take the SAT, ACT, both, or neither? Most juniors test in the fall or spring; map it out now to avoid the headache later.

Last month, our very own Linda Sunshine Keiles & Eve Lunt headed to Chicago for the annual Higher Education Consultants Association conference, an organization K&L has been involved with for almost a decade.

Over the course of the trip, they:
• Heard directly from admissions departments on what they’re looking for right now
• Expanded their expertise across topics ranging from new resources in the field to international options and student advocacy
• Toured four Chicagoland campuses up close: DePaul University, Lake Forest College, Loyola University Chicago, and Northwestern University
• Connected with college consultants from around the world

Testing Update: The SAT + ACT might be making a comeback 📈

• 1,400+ UC faculty members signed a letter asking UC to reinstate SAT/ACT requirements - UC has agreed to study the issue further
• This application season, many highly competitive schools are requiring testing, including Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Cornell, UPenn + several others

Will other schools follow suit? Only time will tell. We've got our finger on the pulse; stay tuned for updates as this progresses.

Congratulations to our K&L college graduates! 🎓

We first met many of these students when they were in high school (or before!), unsure of where they wanted to go or who they wanted to become.

Watching them walk across that stage confident, accomplished, and ready to take on the world is exactly why we do this work.

Cheers to the class of 2026. This is just the beginning.

(These are just a few of our amazing grads - so proud of every single one of you, pictured or not!)
