On Saturday, February 7, three North Laurel swimmers competed in the KHSAA First Round of the State Championships at Scott High School in Taylor Mill, Kentucky. Avery Murray competed in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, Cameron Wagovich swam the 100-yard breaststroke, and Boston Rupard competed in the 200-yard freestyle. All three athletes worked tirelessly throughout the season and faced strong competition to earn their spots at the First Round of State.
Avery Murray delivered an outstanding performance, swimming two personal best times and breaking her own school records in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Her 50-yard freestyle was one of the most exciting races of the entire meet, ending in a three-way tie with all three swimmers touching the wall at the exact same time โ 25.17 to the hundredth of a second. That time earned her a shared 5th-place finish and advanced her to the final round of the KHSAA State Championships at the University of Kentucky in Lexington on February 21. In the 100-yard freestyle, she placed 13th overall.
Cameron Wagovich competed in the 100-yard breaststroke and turned in a strong performance, finishing 16th overall. Cameronโs dedication and work ethic continue to set the standard for our program, and we look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next season.
Boston Rupard competed in the 200-yard freestyle and earned a 15th-place finish in his first trip to the Semi-State Championship. As a freshman, Boston has already proven himself to be a determined competitor. He swam to a new personal best and approaches every race with a positive attitude and the goal of continually improving.
Competing at the state level is no small accomplishment. Each of these swimmers represented North Laurel with pride, sportsmanship, and determination. As a coach, I am incredibly proud of the effort they put into their training, the way they supported one another, and the respect they showed to competitors from across the region. As this season comes to a close for most, we look forward to continuing to grow our program and welcoming new swimmers who will discover just how special the sport of swimming truly is.
