Second annual Summer Symphony camp providing Cache and Box Elder County youth musicians a place to continue making music through the summer! This program and repertoire is designed for students from 6th grade through 9th grade.

The aim of this summer camp is threefold:

1. To provide students with the opportunity to make music over the summer thus supporting local school music programs (especially school programs) by giving students a place to make music and keep the enthusiasm for playing music alive over the break.

2. Experience playing in a full symphony, playing with instrumentation they are not used to while being able to interact and build relationships with other musicians from around the valley that have the same drive and commitment to playing their instrument.

3. Have fun and build lasting friendships!

Let's talk about reed maintenance! Some of these tips may seem obvious, but you would (or if you're a middle school band teacher, probably not LOL) be surprised at the percentage of young musicians who lack the proper care for something that is so essential to their playing.

Here are some reasons why you should take better care of your reeds:

-. Reeds will last longer
- Save money, because your reeds will last longer
- You won't have to wear in as many reeds, because your reeds will last longer
- Your instrument will be more hygienic
- Assert superiority in your section

NB: Also, swab your instrument after each time you play and wash the cleaning swab regularly.

Let's talk about key signatures! One of my favorite music theory topics to teach. Key signatures can sometimes be a polarizing topic because some people love them, and some people hate them!

Three things that we see at the beginning of our music appear I'm order of importance. First is the Clef because we need to know what notes to play. The key signature comes second even before the time signature, which is interesting because we have always been taught that rhythm is more important than pitch.

Think of it this way, no matter what key signature your piece of music is, you will the meter is read the same. BUT the time signature changes the notes that you play. Patterns on the piano, fingerings and slide positions are completely reliant (aside from the clef) on the key signature!

How many times have you heard someone say, "I wish I hadn't quit learning music when I was younger"? I can honestly say I have lost count!

When we were younger, new things would often seem too hard and take too long to learn. With age comes wisdom, where we've come to realize that all worthwhile pursuits require time and effort.

I'll going to get a little philosophical for a second, but I absolutely love this quote from Ghandi, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. "

So, what are you waiting for??? Take a chance and challenge yourself! Prove to yourself that you can do it. Learn a new skill that will stay with you your whole life long! 🥰

Myth #3 is probably the most common one I hear. Music lessons are just too expensive, I would love to take lessons if they were more affordable.

Myth #1 is one I hear a lot! I'm too old or it's too late for me. But this couldn't be further from the truth! Although there some advantages to start learning music at a younger age, there are benefits to starting later. One such example is having a more developed mind that is able to underconcepts quicker which is a great motivator to continue to learn more.
