All humans need the sun, the air, the trees, the plants, the connection and observation of the life that moves freely and rhythmically throughout our Earth, but for children, it is crucial to their development.
But it’s JUST play time, where is the “learning?”

It’s just playtime: when they touch the soil and create. A creature from the clay, that’s art.

It’s just playtime: when they create a game and keep score, that’s math and leadership.

It’s just playtime: when they fall and get hurt and recover, that resilience and opportunity for others to nurture and show compassion.

It’s just playtime: when they fave conflict in a game or mutterings of gossip stir, that’s conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.

Of course we have proper lessons, focused academic time, and goals, but there is rarely a moment we are not in an active “lesson” throughout the day. Lunch time conversations about the future of the world, their goals and dreams, conflicts resolution and peer mediation, questions on questions being asked from both students and mentors all day.

The learning needs a place and time to integrate. The child needs to feel safe and seen to absorb information, and they need to allowed to be children before they inevitably become an adult.

Individualized is the key word. It looks different for every kid and every “school.”
The nuances of individualized learning and programming can be micro moments and adjustments or major shifts in the activities, expectations and goals. The common denominator in it all is the relationships we build with families and kids, the listening and in observation.
Learning isn’t immediate and growth takes time. We are actively building towards being able to provide small group snd one on one mentorship for every single kid, but for now we make sure we are in constant communication and observation with each child throughout the weeks and sessions. Their personal development happens with the environment and support we provide along with the co-education happening at home.
It truly does take a village to provide holistic learning.

Some highlights from our youngest age group, which we call, the seedlings from the week.

Also had join us for a plant walk to learn some of the useful, edible and medicinal plants on the land. Such wonderful knowledge to share!

Been close to a month and we are so blessed to share with this community and way of education.
We are rolling ahead developing our framework and passion projects with the young leaders.

A quick recap and highlight of our first two weeks at Apogee Lockhart.

I'm so proud of our young leaders for what we have accomplished in just two short weeks.

We start with movement, exercise and improv thank you to the amazing for your leadership in this!

Individual study time, lunch and free play, Socratic Discussion and Project Based Learning make up the rest of time.

Currently, they are working through the Bushido Code and what it means to live by a code, to have principles, values, beliefs and conviction.

They will then showcase their work through a Japanese Market which could be a wide array of cultural practices, food, weaponry etc.

So much more to share and for us to build on!
