LEARNING IS FUN

I prefer small group instruction because it makes learning fun. The children enjoy competitions during the last 15 minutes of class! We have no losers. The team with the most points is the “winning team” and the other team is the “trying team”. This drives them to study at home so they can be on the winning team. Each team is given a Ziplock bag. As each team wins a point, a fruit gummy bear is dropped into their bag. The team with the most points is the “winning team” and gets to choose a treat. Both teams divide their earned gummy bears amongst each other. Everyone is happy!

DID YOU KNOW?
Reading is the most crucial academic skill because it is the foundation for learning? From the grade of K-2 children " learn to read” (not really comprehending “what” they are reading “about”.) After the 2nd grade children "read to learn” (This is the time that as children are reading, they are understanding “what” they are reading about). According to The Reading Foundation, only one-in-three students read proficiently by 3rd grade! Without a strong foundation in reading, children are left behind at the beginning of their education. They lag in every class, year after year because more than 85 percent of the curriculum is taught by reading. And by the end of third grade, 74% of struggling readers will not ever catch up. In fact, one of the most important predictors of graduating from high school is reading proficiently by the end of third grade.

MY EXPERIENCE

Of my thirty years of teaching, eighteen years were taught at the Bates Academy School. When I taught kindergarten, I had to teach through the one-year kindergarten curriculum in just five months. The other five months I taught the first- grade curriculum so the children were ready to begin reading at a second-grade level when they were promoted to 1st grade. By June, at least 95% of my kindergarten students were ready to begin reading at the second- grade level! I implemented an After School Enrichment program which was highly successful in improving students’ reading and math skills. I genuinely enjoy working with children! My biggest reward is watching them succeed!
