Education. Nature. Community. The Kentucky Mushroom Festival (KMF) is a community gathering inspired by fungi, nature, and the land-based traditions of Appalachia. What began as a mushroom-focused event has grown into a weekend centered on learning, exploration, and connection to the natural world. Throughout the festival, attendees can participate in guided mushroom and plant walks, educational t

alks, and hands-on workshops covering topics such as wild foods, herbalism, ecology, and sustainable living. The festival also highlights traditional Appalachian crafts and heritage skills, including demonstrations and workshops in areas such as blacksmithing, woodworking, and other hands-on arts. With camping, music, community, and a vendor village, KMF brings together educators, artisans, foragers, and curious minds to celebrate the forests, culture, and knowledge that shape the Appalachian region.

Gretchen, known as A Joyful Mind, will be creating watercolor, chalk, and nature-based land and water mandalas at KMF. An artist and Dharma teacher living in rural Kentucky, her work is deeply connected to nature, creativity, and Zen practice.

🌙✨ FACILITATOR SPOTLIGHT: Staci Shaffer Thomas 🔭

When the sun goes down at KMF, look up!

Retired physics and astronomy teacher Staci Shaffer Thomas will be guiding festival-goers on a night sky tour, sharing the constellations and the stories behind them.

🔭 Using her 10-inch Dobsonian telescope, guests will also get a chance to view planets, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and other deep-sky objects.

Sky tours begin at dusk, with everyone getting a chance to take a look through the telescope.

Come experience a different kind of nighttime magic at KMF. 🌌🍄

FACILITATOR SPOTLIGHT: Eric Hensley

Eric first hunted morels with his grandpa in the late ’80s. Years later, his curiosity grew beyond morels as he began learning about the many mushrooms around him that few people locally seemed to know.

In 2020, he self-published Magic Mushrooms of the Midwest and recently worked with mycologist Alan Rockefeller on the updated "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the Midwest".

🎤 At KMF, Eric will lead a roughly one-hour talk about common psilocybin mushrooms found throughout Midwestern states, followed by a Q&A. He’ll cover species including Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, P. caeruleorhiza, P. caerulipes, P. cubensis, Panaeolus cinctulus, P. bisporus, Pluteus brunneidiscus, Gymnopilus luteofolius, G. subspectabilis, G. luteus, and more.
