Hello from the ACC Foundation. Hey y’all! Tax season will be here before you know it! Learn how the ACC Foundation can help you GIVE SMART with required minimum distributions.
Smart Philanthropy – Your RMDs
Savvy philanthropists are becoming increasingly aware of an option available to those taking Required Minimum Distributions from their IRAs. The strategy involves two dynamics: Required Minimum Distributions and High Standard Deductions.
Under current rules, people must start withdrawing from their IRAs after turning 72. These taxable withdrawals are mandatory and the penalty for not doing so is significant – 50% of any shortfall. While many people utilize these funds, many others would rather avoid these taxable distributions.
In addition, recent tax law has increased the Standard Deduction levels—and today, only a small percentage of people still itemize.
Here’s the strategy: Use your RMD to make your charitable donations.
With a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), a person can support Arapahoe Community College with a gift from their IRA. Although these gifts are not deductible for tax purposes—if you’re no longer itemizing deductions, it really doesn’t matter. You still receive the Standard Deduction. And no income tax is due when you support the College with a QCD.
This strategy makes the most sense for people who:
Have sufficient retirement income from non-IRA sources
No longer itemize income tax deductions
Want to preserve available cash on hand
Have reached age 72 and must take RMDs

Hello from the ACC Foundation. We are all about GIVING to ACC! And we have some info to share when it comes to taxes and charitable gifts!
Are You Happy With Your Required Minimum Distributions?
For many people, IRA distributions represent a significant portion of income during retirement. During our working years, we set aside money on a tax-deferred basis – investing these funds to support us during our golden years. These accounts grow tax-free until they are eventually withdrawn.
It’s a powerful option for everyone as we prepare for retirement.
For some, however, these IRA withdrawals can create an income tax headache. Once we reach age 72, the IRS requires that we take a minimum withdrawal every year – a Required Minimum Distribution – whether we want the income or not. And these withdrawals are fully taxable, and we can’t skip them without facing a significant tax penalty.
There is an option, however. You could donate your Required Minimum Distribution to Arapahoe Community College. This option works well for people who:
Already have sufficient income from non-IRA sources
Claim the Standard Deduction for income tax purposes
Want to preserve available cash on hand (e.g. checking account)
Have reached age 72 and must take RMDs
This type of IRA gift is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution. And even though it doesn’t produce a charitable income tax deduction, if you’re no longer itemizing your deductions—it doesn’t matter. You’re still receiving full benefit from the Standard Deduction.
You would also preserve available cash—no big checks from your bank account. No income tax is due when we receive your QCD, as 100% would go to support current students. And, once again, a QCD also counts towards your Required Minimum Distribution.
For those who qualify (age 70½ and above), a QCD is something to explore.
For more information, please contact Courtney Loehfelm at [email protected] or 720.440.4666.
There is never any expectation or obligation to complete a gift.

Dear ACC Community Partners,
At this time of unprecedented challenges, we want you to know that ACC stands with you in the fight against this current global pandemic, COVID-19. ACC has had the honor to be your community college partner for over 50 years. We take our role in our communities seriously, and we are very proud of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni who are making a difference in addressing these COVID-19 challenges.
ACC has had the privilege to train many of the nurses, EMT’s, police officers, early childhood professionals, medical assistants, lab technicians, and mortuary personnel that are on the front lines of this battle. Their heroism simply has been remarkable. While we have temporarily closed our campus facilities and moved to remote instruction in an effort play our role in social distancing; the college is still open in every sense of the word to serve you. If you have been laid off and/or seeking a career change, we are here for you. We partner with major sectors such as health care, technology, finance, the arts, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing so we can keep top talent flowing into our workforce with sustaining wages.
Our ACC Foundation and workforce programs are here to partner with your organizations and businesses who seek to collaborate to build innovative workforce solutions such as apprenticeships, scholarship funding, and financial support for program innovation. We seek to graduate well-prepared students from our high quality programs at the most affordable cost in Colorado, and we can’t do it without the financial support of our partners.
