September is Su***de Prevention Month
Yesterday I attended "An Afternoon of Hope", a conference/webinar on Su***de Awareness Month. While it is a subject most people do not want to talk about, it's important that we do. When I first started as a counselor 20+ years ago, there were theories that we shouldn't talk about su***de because it...

As the majority of kids are now back in school, I wanted to share 4 quick tips to help make the 2021-2022 school year a success:
1. Address any concerns or fears your child has early on. Do daily check ins and be sure your child knows they can come to you or a trusted family friend any time.
2. Be sure your child is getting adequate sleep. Pediatricians suggest a minimum of 8 hours, more for teenagers!
3. Take each challenge or disappointment on as an opportunity for growth. Coach your child on how to approach teachers and coaches with questions or help with assignments. Self Advocacy is an absolute necessity in today's world.
4. Sit down once a week to go over grades, papers, returned work. This way you shouldn't be surprised if your child is struggling. Make this a positive experience by focusing on the positives and making a plan to address any concerns.

Tips for Doing School at Home & Online
1) Keep your morning routine. Get up when you normally do to start school. Sleeping in will only make getting started harder.
2) Create a To Do List and continue to use your planner. Stick to it!
3) Set specific goals to accomplish each task.
4) Stay positive. This is a new experience for everyone, it might take time to work out some kinks.
5) Learning online is not the same as Face-to-Face interaction with your teachers. Be ready to spend more time reviewing notes, power points, videos, textbooks, and online resources to make sure you’ve learned the material well.
6) Save your files on Google Drive or Dropbox. You may need information for a project, paper, quiz or test. You want everything the teacher provides available in an organized system to retrieve information quickly as needed.
7)Ch eck in with the teacher early on if you have questions or simply need to clarify something. Check in with friends to see if you can study online together through Zoom, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or whatever platform you prefer.
8) Schedule time to get in some exercise each day. 20-30 minutes outdoors will keep your brain working at its best Take a lunch break….stick to a schedule and routine.
9) Have some healthy snacks (almonds, apples, carrots, yogurt etc.)to munch on and drink plenty of water while you study. You know why…no explanation needed here!
10) Use resources that help you learn and be productive.

These educational companies are offering free subscriptions due to school closings. This is an awesome resource for families. I know there are families who do not have access to computers or internet. If you are able, I encourage you to reach out to these families, ask what would be helpful and offer to print copies for families with limited resources.

Attention AP Students:
Stay on top of your course work in your AP classes so you are still able to do well on exams!

The College Board is developing tools to mitigate the impact of school closures on students in the Advanced Placement Program. All AP students and teachers will be able to draw on the free online resources that were provided to every AP classroom this fall. Additional resources will be made easily accessible to AP students and teachers through mobile phones and other devices. These include free online AP lessons and review sessions from some of the top AP teachers in the country.
The AP program is finalizing streamlined AP exam options that would allow students to test at home, depending on the situation in May. We’re working to give every AP student the opportunity to claim the credit they’ve earned. The AP Program will communicate the details of these additional solutions to educators and students by March 20.
The College Board’s focus will remain on student safety and ensuring all students have the tools they need to work, and opportunities to receive the credit they have earned, during this challenging time.
