Coach DRobs rule #2 in my, “how to always win in tennis,” handbook is to just hit the ball where your opponent is not. You do that enough, you win. Today, Kinsley did that all day to me. I can’t hit a massive forehand back if I can’t get to the ball. She had me running like a crazy man. Kinsley is ready for the season.

Be prepared to see the drill we did at practice today a whole lot more!!! Chasing down lobs and being able to return overheads are very important.

Beierman now has a solid backhand that he figured out on his first private lesson - thanks Nick!!!

I’ve been working with Jazz on a slice serve and slice forehand. She keeps getting more consistent with each.

Was it hot today? Yep. Did we survive? Yep.

Tennis shoes currently in back of truck drying out. It was hot today. Really great tweener attempt today. Unfortunately it was against some middle school kids and they couldn’t appreciate the awesomeness. Man those kids are hard to impress!!!

Had a good hitting session with Jazz this morning. The girl is getting good!!!!

Today at practice, one of the new kids picked up a couple of tennis balls I had just opened and smelled them and said, « I really like that smell!!! ». Poor kid doesn’t realize she is now addicted to tennis for the rest of her life!!!

Pros change coaches like dirty socks. Why? One coach may be good at serves and horrible at volleys. One coach may be able to explain things a way you can understand where another coach makes nonsense. It’s not his fault because we are learn differently. Another player may go to that same coach and he makes total sense to him.

My advice - go steal knowledge!!! Steal from me. Steal from tennis pros in our area. Steal from teammates. Heck, my backhand has gotten better because I stole parts of Kinsley’s backhand by watching her. Why did I do that? Because Kinsley has a great backhand!!! Take everything good a coach or a teammate has to offer and throw the bad aside. Keep building your game by what others have to offer. You can learn something from everyone, even if what you learn is, « I’m never gonna make that goofy shot!!! ».

1. Good to see old and new faces at the tennis meeting tonight. We are in a rebuilding stage. Every school and every sport goes through it at some point. To the past JV and incoming freshman, this is your opportunity!!!! Get out and hit. Use the resources we have made available to you that can make you a state champ. You have two coaches ready and willing to go the extra mile. The only thing stopping you is yourself.

2. Athletic Trainer Dom - this was your week off and yet you came to our meeting. Thank you for everything. You take going above and beyond to the next level.

3. Booster club - thank you for representing at our meeting and all you do for the entire school. The tennis team appreciates everything you do. YOU WILL see tennis volunteers at the concessions stands when you need us. I’ve lived and raised kids both in and outside of Academy ISD, and have never witnessed a booster club do as much as you guys do.
