Krav Maga is a system of simple, easy to learn self defense techniques focusing on delivering the maximum amount of violence in the minimal amount of time.

I am a Certified Krav Maga instructor through the USKMA affiliate program and a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo. As a veteran of the United States Marine Corps I have a long history in the combative arts and a healthy passion for violence. It is my passion to surround myself with others who are willing to work hard, become fit, and train to defend themselves. If you think you might fit this bill, then call me to start your training!

Mounted headlock from a couple different angles. With this technique the most important thing is to get off the ground. Grab both biceps, with your feet as close to your butt as possible explode with a bridge and roll to the side your head is on. If you are able to trap the foot / leg on the surface de you are rolling even better. Once you end up in the guard, if you are still in the headlock I like to apply leverage to the neck with a forearm and push up off of it with the opposite arm. This is quite uncomfortable for the person applying the headlock. Monkey biting (grip twist pull of the skin) works well also. Basically create a lot of pain so they rethink attacking you.

Working wrist locked into choke defenses. I like to train less violent attack with an immediate follow up attack from the aggressor. The idea is to get students out of their head not that they will necessarily be faced with this exact series of attacks. It’s the immediate response with explosiveness and violence. Remember, the idea is not to get into a fight with the attacker but respond with overwhelming violence and speed to get away safely.

3rd carotid choke defenses. If you are unable to drop your weight and pull your head through or are physically unable to throw your attacker another option is to get your hands on the arm that’s choking you, turn your shoulder into their chest and drive them back basically try to outrun their feet. Here we are using a wall for an example but in reality you push until they either trip over their feet, your feet or an unseen obstacle. At that point it’s a scramble to get to your feet and either fight or run.

Continuing with the carotid choke defenses. lol I said in the last post, this is a counter that must happen immediately. If you are unable to drop your weight and get out you are in serious trouble. This is my go to defense. Hooks in and treat it like a head or neck throw. While I didn’t do a follow up attack, anything goes. Stomp on something important. Keep control of the arm and apply an arm bar while standing over them so you can maintain 360 degree field of view.

There are multiple ways to defend against a carotid choke. This one works ONLY if you catch it quickly before the choke is set. You immediately need to get your hands on the arms and chin down quickly. A quick burst to drop your weight (not a squat) and get your head free. Attack the groin if you have the time and availability. If you can not get the defensive to work immediately I recommend you dump them over your shoulder similarly to a head or neck throw.

Knife defenses suck. All of them. Every single one! Especially the fancy over complicated ones. If you think you won’t get cut, stabbed or slashed you’re kidding yourself. That being said it’s better to do something than have a sharp pointy thing going into your body repeatedly. In Krav we like to use bursting with simultaneous strikes and blocks. In this particular drill I like to block (very forcefully) against the shoulder and arm the isolate the weapon. Attack with stomps, knees, kicks, whatever and push (again, forcefully) the opponent away. Shown from both sides. Remember, it’s the violence of action that will save your life. Fancy gets you killed!

What’s your “go to” hand gun defense from the front. We are doing the cupping technique, groin kick with a follow on attack. Simple fast and effective. There are a bunch of different ways to do this. There’s also a lot of BS or overly technical ways. I always prefer the KISS principle.

If you train in martial arts but not with fi****ms are you really training? Got to the school early today to work on some dry fire and transition between rifle and pistol. Thank you BOB for your sacrifice. Make sure you get professional training to be confident and competent. Doesn’t hurt if your friend is a Green Beret with a bunch of deployments either. Check out for world class training. If you’re not willing to put the time and money into training I suggest you buy a dog.
