“No Lights, No Sirens”: Local Partnership Brings Sensory-Friendly Emergency Services Experiences to Gene Cook Supports, LLC.
Two customized visits helped individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities become more comfortable with ambulances, police vehicles and emergency responders

TARRS, Pa. — Mutual Aid Ambulance Service and Paws for Safety Non-profit Co. recently partnered with Gene Cook Supports, LLC. and the Pennsylvania State Police offering two customized, sensory-friendly emergency services experiences at the Gene Cook Supports, LLC. Farm in Tarrs, PA.

Held on September 8th and September 15th, the “No Lights, No Sirens” visits were designed specifically for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By eliminating flashing lights, sirens and other potentially overwhelming stimuli, participants were able to explore emergency vehicles, meet first responders, and learn about their work in a calm, welcoming environment.

“At Mutual Aid EMS, we’ve learned that giving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities a chance to explore our ambulances and equipment ahead of time makes a real difference. When people can meet our team, get familiar with the sights and sounds, and understand what we do in a calm setting, it lowers anxiety and builds trust. For us, it’s about being proactive and making sure every member of the communities we serve feels safe, supported, and comfortable if they ever need our help.” EMS Chief and Chief Operating Officer Michael Wystepek
